Benefits of The European Forum Alpbach

A scholarship for participating in EFA will cover the following:

• Participation fee
• Applicants’ accommodation throughout the EFA26
• Should the remaining costs (food, transportation, special needs, etc.) pose a financial burden, applicants may apply for additional support. The allocation of such support is subject to the availability of funds and relies on the solidarity of other participants.

In line with the principle of solidarity, applicants who have sufficient financial means are kindly encouraged to cover their own accommodation costs of €49.00 per night, i.e. a total of € 539 for the 11 nights of EFA26 (with bookings arranged by EFA). By opting out of accommodation coverage, you contribute to making participation at the Forum possible for individuals from less privileged backgrounds.

This year’s Symposium, themed “Effective Governance and AI Transformation for the 2030 Agenda: Fostering Transformative Actions for Innovating Public Services,” will be held from October 30 to November 1, 2024, in Incheon, Republic of Korea. It is organized by UN DESA’s Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG), in partnership with the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Incheon Metropolitan City.

Building on outcomes from recent key events like the 2023 SDG Summit and the 2024 UN Public Service Forum, the 8th Regional Symposium will highlight the role of effective governance and AI integration in driving public sector innovation, improving efficiency, and accelerating the achievement of the SDGs. It will explore how AI can transform public services, enhance government operations, and address current and future challenges in public administration.

The Symposium’s themes will align with the Global Digital Compact, which was adopted at the 2024 Summit of the Future, and reflect the “Quintet of Change,” focusing on innovation, data, digitalization, and foresight for a secure, inclusive digital future.

Objectives:

The 8th Regional Symposium aims to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Asia, the Pacific, and beyond by utilizing effective governance and AI technologies. It brings together participants from Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to share experiences and expertise on AI-driven public service innovation. MAPS initiated Young Professional Fellowship Program to provide youth with a professionally organized platform. The Program allows the participants to experiment with their capabilities.

MAPS has conducted the YPFP five times in Uzbekistan, Maldives, Turkey, and Bangkok, with hundreds of participants from more than 40 states worldwide. This year, MAPS announces its 6th YPFP Nepal 2023 to add another link to its chain of aspirations. This golden opportunity for youth will help them to share their fresh ideas with the world. Discussions will be on approaches to make trading systems more resilient, mainly in developing countries. Also, it will clarify the feasibility and effectiveness of a set of trade-related “high-impact initiatives” to respond to global challenges and expedite progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This Trade Forum comprised four plenary meetings on the following topics:

Format of the World Forum for Democracy

The 11th WFD will discuss the issues and generate new ideas for tackling the world’s peace challenges today. Mainly, the WFD format is as follows:

Plenary Sessions allow participants to discuss with speakers from all continents. The speakers include politicians, public and private officials, international organizations, and members of civil societies.

Forum Talks gather academics and relevant experts to discuss and share their experiences on improving the current situation.

Forum Labs informs participants about innovative initiatives that offer solutions to the fundamental questions above based on an analysis of their actual impact and replicability.

The initiatives should help participants to understand how democracy, democratic organizations, and practices help wage peace and causes of war in our societies.

The labs are an essential part of the WFD, intending to address specific issues through critically analyzing tested initiatives.

Public or private organizations who have submitted the selected initiatives will present their initiatives in short speeches of ten minutes. Multidisciplinary panels and participants in the labs will assess their speech.

Participants will discuss the key lessons and the labs’ results in a summing-up session to prepare the overall conclusions of the Forum. The Forum participants will vote for selecting the winner of the Democracy Innovation Award from the presented initiatives.

Registration for the Sheikh Hasina Youth Volunteer Award 2020 is now going on. It is worth mentioning that Dhaka_ the capital of Bangladesh_ was declared as the “OIC Youth Capital 2020” by the Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum (ICYF) on 25 December 2019. Due to the COVID-19 spread, the selection of Dhaka as OIC Youth Capital could not be well celebrated in 2020.

The call for submission of abstracts and registration for the 2021 UN/Austria Symposium is now open.

The 2021 UN/Austria Symposium “Space Applications for Food Systems” will be held from 7 to 9 September in Graz and also online. The key topic for the 2021 symposium is how space technologies support food systems and therefore contribute to activities around the UN Food Systems Summit summoned by the UN Secretary General.

Program structure

The program will include:

Keynote presentations:  delivered by invited speakers;

Sessions:  presentations from consecutive speakers, followed by short Q&A sessions with the audience;

Panels:  speakers deliver a very brief introductory statement or presentation, followed by a moderated conversation among speakers and a Q&A session with the audience;

Pitches: very succinct presentations in which specific projects or initiatives are showcased, as in an “elevator pitch”.

Next to the above, the organizers are planning to suggest interactive ways for having online conversations among participants during the Symposium, particularly to find common grounds and discuss possible partnerships.

The symposium will look at how space data and applications can contribute to sustainable food systems with the following topics:

• Land use, waterways, and ocean management considering a nature-positive food production
• Optimization of food transport and traceability
• Crops and animals’ health, and prevention of pandemics

How are the host cities selected?

After UNESCO receives the Applications, an Advisory Committee assesses the qualifying applications, determines the top two candidates and, after a site visit to the top two candidates, recommends the two candidate cities to the UNESCO Director-General. The final decision is at the discretion of the Director-General of UNESCO who designates the Global Host City.

Host cities’ responsibilities

The selected Global Host City will assume responsibility for the organization and all costs of the Programme of Activities, under the observation of and in close cooperation with UNESCO and UNESCO’s partner, the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, an (NGO) that supervises the whole planning, production, and coordination of the Programme of Activities.

The Programme of Activities includes two parts:

• Educational and Outreach Programme
• All-Star Global Concert

3. Clear Cotton category:

This specific category is for songs highlighting the matter of child labor in the framework of the ILO’s CLEAR Cotton Project and accepts entries from applicants living in Burkina Faso, Mali, Pakistan, and Peru.

Who are eligible?

• Children/youth groups, organizations, schools, non-formal education programs, children affected or at risk of child labour can apply to the first category.
• Musicians of all forms, professional and unprofessional, of any age from across the world, can enter this category.
• Singers of all forms, professional and amateurs, regardless of any age limitations from the four above-mentioned countries can apply to the 3rd category.
• The competition equally values contributions from different genres – soul or song, highlife or hip-hop, folk, jazz, rock or tango, classical music of every tradition and every kind of music besides!

Applications are now open for the Climate Science Olympiad 2021.  This Olympiad or competition is organized by Climate Science annually and participants in the different age groups who meet other conditions as well can apply for the program from around the world. Participants in this tournament write about and share their solutions to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change. Each year, 10,000 participants compete in this tournament.

How does it work?

The tournament has multiple stages involving three groups of qualifiers plus a various numbers of participants, and applicants can register as a qualifier in their chosen category and in their chosen language as per its deadline (see at the bottom of the page).

Tournament stages

1. Local Qualifiers (online )

• Participants: 10,000
• Time: January-September 2021

In this stage, individuals or teams of two compete with each other. Competitors can choose one of the three problem statements and respond to it. Participants are given the topics 10 days before the qualifier event but the exact title is not announced until the start of the actual event. Then, participants will write essay responses to the questions relating to the problem statement within 3 hours. (Read more below)

2. Semi-finals

• Participants: 500 (qualifiers)
• Time: Sept-Oct 2021

The top 5% of all qualifier competitors move on to the global semi-finals. Semi-finals are conducted online and semi-finalists are invited to a community education training that helps them prepare for the semi-final (and final).

3. Finalists

• Number: 50
• Date: Nov 2021 (finalists convene at the UN Climate Summit (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland). The final is conducted in-person and finalists will be invited to the COP26 summit in the UK.
• Winners will win 10,000 dollars prize.

 Eligibilities

• There are two age groups for participation (14-17 and 18-25). If you are in one of those at the time of registration, you qualify to participate regardless of nationality or other factors.
• Participants must be real persons.
• Both members of a team must fall in the same age group at the time of application.
• Proof-of-age from everyone who advances to the semi-finals will be asked.

Applications are now open for the 2021 Global Scholars Academy to be held in Geneva Switzerland. The Institute for Global Law and Policy (IGLP) of Harvard University’s Law School in collaboration with the Graduate Institute Geneva holds the second Global Scholars Academy in August 2021. The Global Scholars Academy is an intensive residential experience aimed at enabling junior faculty and post-doctoral researchers to engage in continued, interdisciplinary, peer-to-peer partnership under the close mentorship of research faculty drawn from the world’s high-ranked universities.

The program especially convenes post-doctoral scholars from the Global South to work, interact, collaborate and do researches together for the duration of the program.  If you are one of those scholars, this is an outstanding opportunity to apply.

Program format

The 2021 Academy will provide a distinct interdisciplinary curriculum intended for junior scholars with scholarly projects related to this year’s themes and which focus on issues of importance for researchers and policymakers in the global South. The Academy will comprise of thematic mini-courses or “streams”, plenary lectures, and writing workshops.

Benefits

The Academy program benefit includes:

• The opportunity to enhance academic and professional skills in presenting research, developing curricular materials and participating in Global scholarly dialog.
• In addition, writing workshops will offer scholars the opportunity to receive comprehensive, valuable feedback on their research from their peers and senior colleagues in small group settings.
• During the program, partakers will workshop their ongoing research, review current scholarship developments, reconsider canonical texts, and network with colleagues from around the world.

Eligibilities

• High-profile and established post-PhD scholars from around the world can apply.
• The institute prefers applicants from the Global South who have 2-5 years post-PhD experience or currently hold postdoctoral positions or faculty posts.
• The academy is open to advanced junior scholars working to understand and map the levers of political, economic, and legal authority in the world today.
• Applications from those working on policy challenges of significance to communities in the Global South are highly welcome.

The International Student Festival of HARAKAT 2021 will be a pioneering and interactive virtual gathering for a global network of students. This festival is one of the most leading international student festivals held annually but this year it will go fully online due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions among countries.

The festival has been formerly hosted by Iranian universities but in the 2021 edition young professionals, youth activists, early-career academics and students contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can participate in the festival virtually. Furthermore, it is organized by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Iran in collaboration with the Western Asian Development Institute (WADI) to convene and motivate international students for exchanging their experiences in scientific activities; encouraging their projects; bolstering inspiration, and interacting with other students in a platform of cooperation for international students.
