Applications are open for the Master of Science in Global Urban Health (MSc GUH) for A.Y. 2027-28 at the University of Freiburg, Germany. The MSc GUH is part of the DAAD EPOS Scholarship (Development-Related Postgraduate Courses), and only a limited number of scholarships are available.
The MSc in Global Urban Health at the University of Freiburg is an interdisciplinary, practice-driven postgraduate programme tailored for professionals from diverse backgrounds, including medicine, social sciences, urban planning, psychology, and anthropology. Grounded in the principles of global health and urban development, this programme offers a comprehensive exploration of the complex health challenges faced by urban populations worldwide. Students are immersed in a dynamic academic environment where multiple faculties and international experts provide insights into research methodologies, communicable and non-communicable diseases, environmental health, mental well-being, and the socio-political dimensions of urban health systems.
Structured to balance academic rigour with real-world application, the programme spans one full academic year, beginning with nine months of intensive coursework in Freiburg, followed by a Master’s thesis, which can be conducted either abroad or as a desk study. Its modular format offers flexibility, enabling participants to complete individual modules as short courses for a Certificate of Advanced Studies. Benefits of the DAAD EPOS Scholarship
Selected Candidates will benefit from the DAAD EPOS scholarship as follows:
- Monthly payments of 992 euros for graduates
- Accident, health, and personal liability insurance
- Travel allowance provided unless covered by home country or other funding source
Additional benefits under certain circumstances:
- Monthly rent subsidy
- Monthly allowance for accompanying family members
Who can apply?
Candidates who fulfill the criteria below are eligible to apply for the DAAD EPOS Scholarship:
- Applicants must be employed by a public authority, state, or private company in a developing country engaged in planning and implementing development policies.
- Candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related subject, typically completed in four years.
- Achieved far above average results (upper third) in academic degree with at least two years of related professional experience after gaining the bachelor’s degree.
- Academic degrees should generally not be more than 6 years old at the time of application.
- Applicants residing in Germany for more than 15 months as of the application deadline are ineligible.
- Meet the language skills: IELTS (Band 6) or TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, 80 internet-based).

- Curriculum vitae (using the Europass template)
- Letter of Motivation
- Letter of recommendation from the current employer (on official letterhead with signature and stamp)
- Certificate(s) of Employment showing at least two years of relevant work experience
- Recent proof of Language Skills (IELTS or TOEFL for English, required German proficiency for courses taught in German)
- Copies of higher education degree certificates (with certified translations if not in English or German)
- Copy of full set of transcripts of records (with an explanation of the grading system if not included)
- APS Certificate (for applicants from the People’s Republic of China)
