Applications for Indonesia Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB) Scholarships are now open for 2026-2027. This Scholarship is available for students from developing countries, including Afghanistan, to pursue their Bachelor’s, Master or Ph.D. in Indonesia.

The Directorate General of Higher Education, Technology and Research and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology manages the Scholarship offered since 2006 to 1,608 recipients from 97 countries. The KNB Scholarship supports Indonesian higher education institutions’ internationalization efforts.

This Scholarship’s primary objectives are to:

2. Fostering enhanced cultural comprehension among developing countries.

Benefits of the Indonesia KNB Scholarships

KNB Scholarship covers the following allowances for the awardees:

• Settlement allowance upon arrival in Indonesia;
• Monthly living and book allowances for Indonesian language preparation;

Eligibility Criteria

Before you start gathering your documents, let’s make sure you fit the profile for the level you are applying for.

💡 Good News: If you are from an English-speaking country or your previous degree was taught entirely in English, you do not need a TOEFL/IELTS score! Just provide proof from your previous university.

Your Application Checklist

To apply, you will need to scan and upload the following documents. Please ensure everything is in English or Bahasa Indonesia.

1. Letters of Recommendation

• From the Embassy: Visit the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in your home country to get this official letter.
• From Work: A letter from your boss or supervisor. (If you are currently unemployed, a personal statement explaining your status is okay).
• From School: A letter from your previous school or university recommending you for this scholarship.

2. Academic Records

• Your official Certificates/Diplomas and Transcripts. Note: These must be legalized by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your country.

• CV/Resume: An updated summary of your education and experience.
• Passport: A standard passport (not diplomatic) that is valid until at least December 31, 2027.

Health & Safety

• Medical Report: A doctor’s report issued within the last 3 months. It must check for:

• Physical health.
• Infectious diseases (TB, Syphilis, HIV/AIDS, Ebola, Mpox).
• Mental health status.
• Drug use (Must be negative for Amphetamines, Marijuana, Morphine, etc.).

• For African Applicants: A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is also required.

5. The “Get to Know You” Video

• Create a 5-minute video and upload it to YouTube.
• What to say: Introduce yourself, explain why you want to study in Indonesia, and why you chose this specific university and major. Paste the link in your application.

Extra Steps for PhD Candidates

If you are applying for a Doctoral degree, you have two extra requirements:

1. Supervisor’s Approval: You need a letter from a professor at the KNB partner university who agrees to be your research supervisor.
2. Statement of Purpose: A paper explaining your research topic, why it matters, and your dissertation plan.

Important Conditions (The Fine Print)

To accept this scholarship, you must agree to a few specific lifestyle rules set by the program:

• Marital Status: You generally cannot marry an Indonesian citizen or another scholarship recipient during your study period.
• Family Planning: Female applicants must be willing to not be pregnant during the scholarship period.
• Military Service: You cannot be in active military service while on the scholarship.

• Collect as much information as possible on the desired study program and universities. After admission, no change is likely in either the universities or your study program.
• The recommendation letter from the Indonesian Embassy in your home country is mandatory. The Embassy issues the recommendation letter based on verification and necessary background or security checks by the Indonesian Embassy. If there is no Indonesian official representative in your country, applicants can get a letter from any Indonesian Embassy accredited to their home country.
• All documents should be in English or Bahasa or officially translated into English or Bahasa.
• The participants from English-speaking countries must also meet the requirement to provide written proof of their English proficiency.
• The universities will conduct the selection process and may ask for an online interview with the potential candidates.
