About the award

The World Food Prize Foundation nomination for the Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application for 2022 is now open. The foundation awards a $10,000 cash award for Field Research and Application to an individual who has made an outstanding and science-based achievement in international agriculture and food production in recognition of h/her efforts in fulfilling Dr. Borlaug’s dream.

Eligibility criteria

Nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Nominees must be below the age of 40
  • Nominees must be actively working in the discipline, research area, position, at the production or processing level, or on the project(s) with farmers, animal herders, fishers or others in rural communities for which they are being honored. They may be affiliated with a public or private educational, research or development organization or related institution.
  • Have shown intellectual courage and determination in the fight to eradicate global hunger and poverty.
  • Nominees remain eligible for consideration beyond the year of their nomination, at the discretion of the Award Jury, as far as the award criteria and age requirements are satisfied.
  • The award is to be presented to one person. In exceptional circumstances, another person may share the award for joint collaborative efforts and achievement.

Nominator Eligibility

  • Any individual or organization may nominate another nominee for the award.  Nomination letters from organizations must be signed by an executive officer. Self-nominations are unacceptable.
  • Nominators should have a direct understanding of the nominee’s work and should provide a number of particular examples, indicating how the nominee’s achievements are in line with the award criteria.
  • Individuals or organizations with direct knowledge or a basic understanding of the nominee’s accomplishment may write nomination letters.

Nomination required documents

A brief statement (within 3000 words) explaining:
1) the nominee’s work and achievements, with details and examples that represent several of the criteria set for this award;
2) how, in carrying out this work, the nominee reflects the qualities demonstrated by Dr. Borlaug during his early career; and
3) the effect or results of the nominee’s work.

  • Nominee’s Curriculum Vitae including date of birth, country of residence, education, and professional background.
  • One nomination letter and two supporting letters describing, clarifying, and highlighting the main accomplishments of the nominee must be delivered with the nomination.
  • Photos: A head shot of the nominee is needed (minimum 300 dpi resolution);
  •  2 additional action photos of the nominee at work may also be submitted.
