Opportunity Description

The National University of Singapore (NUS) offers NUS Medicine Graduate Studies Award (GSA) for Ph.D. Students. NUS Medicine’s admission committee is responsible for shortlisting up to five (5) best candidates for the GSA award each year. Applicants do not need to apply for GSA during the application process.

If you are interested in a full-time graduate research program at NUS Medicine and willing to continue to a higher degree, this opportunity is absolutely for you! But remember to provide GRE and TOEFL scores to support your admission application, plus a high-grade score.

Benefits of the NUS Medicine Graduate Studies Award

Ph.D. Students admitted after the August 2023 intake will receive the following allowances:

  • A monthly stipend is as follows:
  1. Singapore Citizen: S$2,800
  2. Singapore Permanent Resident: S$2,400
  3. International Student: S$2,200
  • Central Provident Fund (CPF) monthly stipend
  • Effective from the AY2023-24 intake, all GSA awardees are eligible for the following amount:
  1. An additional $1500 monthly stipend over four years, and
  2. A $4,800 one-time research allowance upon passing the Qualifying Examination in the 2nd year of Ph.D. candidature.
  • Full research tuition fee subsidy for up to 4 years
  • A one-off air travel payment for the one-way ticket of up to S$750 on economy class and up to 20 kg baggage per trip; please remember that this is for newly registered international students’ trip from their home country to Singapore to commence study
  • A one-off settling-in allowance of S$1000 (only for international students)

Ph.D. Students admitted before the August 2023 intake will receive the following assistance:

  • The monthly stipend is as follows:
  1. Singapore Citizen: S$3,600
  2. Singapore Permanent Resident: S$3,200
  3. International Student: S$3,000
  • Full research tuition fee subsidy for up to 4 years
  • Education allowance comprising:
  1. Laptop allowance up to $3,000
  2. Books/Software up to $3,000
  3. Conference/workshop/courses and other scholarly activities up to $10,000

Eligibilities and Criteria

The scholarships are open to applicants who meet the following criteria:

  • Have graduated with an undergraduate degree with at least First Class Honours / Highest Distinction or equivalent
  • have received an admission offer to a full-time graduate research program at NUS Medicine
  • Be eligible for MOE Subsidy:
  1. Students of all nationalities with higher degree studies and wish to pursue a second graduate program of the same or lower level are eligible for the MOE subsidy.
  2. Students who have previously enjoyed government subsidies or scholarships in a graduate program will not be eligible for MOE subsidy in another graduate program at the same or lower level.
  3. Students of all nationalities who did not complete an earlier original graduate program and are now transferred or readmitted to another program at the same level within NUS or across Autonomous Universities (AUs) will be eligible for MOE subsidy.

Candidates should compile the following documents and submit them in soft copies to the GDA2 online admission system:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research Proposal
  • Statement of Purpose
  • copy of the Bachelor’s degree transcript and certificate with English translations for non-English documents
  • Recent passport-sized photograph
  • Proof of Identity, including a copy of Singapore NRIC (Singaporean and Singapore PR) and a copy of Passport (International Applicants)
  • Two Referee contact details in the Application system
  • Copy of GRE scoresheet
  • Copy of TOEFL / IELTS scoresheet from applicants whose native tongue and medium of instruction are NOT English.

  • Copy of Master’s degree transcript and certificate
  • A List of Publication(s) and Impact Factor
  • Abstract of Independent Research
  • copy of Professional Certificate
  • Documentary Evidence of Academic Awards and Honours with English translation, if applicable
