Applications are open for the NUS Ph.D. Scholarships in Data Science in Singapore for 2024!

The National University of Singapore (NUS) Ph.D. program in Data Science is a joint study and scholarship program by the NUS Institute of Data Science (IDS) and NUS Graduate School’s Integrative Sciences and Engineering Programme (ISEP). The program prepares students with a typical set of interdisciplinary skills for Data Science careers in academia or industry.

The Institute of Data Science (IDS) adds and builds on significant strengths in data science and analytics at the National University of Singapore. IDS supports and coordinates data science research initiatives across the University and provides solutions by combining the skills and knowledge from multiple disciplines to tackle a problem well-roundedly from all angles.

IDS works with industry partners to contribute to solutions and innovation across diverse sectors, such as government, community services, industry, and education.

With this Ph.D. program in Data Science, IDS primarily aims to educate the next generation of “brain-heavy” data scientists.

Awardees of the NUS Ph.D. Scholarships in Data Science will benefit from the program for four years as follows:

  • Monthly stipends for four years:
  1. Singapore Citizens: S$3,600 + Central Provident Fund (CPF)
  2. Singapore Permanent Residents (SPR): S$3,400
  3. Non-Singaporeans/Non-PRs: S$3,100
  • Tuition Fees Subsidies for four years
  • Conference Allowance provided

Eligibilities and Criteria

All applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • The scholarship and admission applications are open to all nationalities
  • Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree or above, with at least 2nd Upper Honours or equivalent qualifications
  • Demonstrate outstanding research potential and strong research interests in Data Sciences
  • Applicants to the Ph.D. program in Data Science should meet the ISEP Scholarship’s eligibility and admission criteria
  • Awardees will work in ISEP and IDS campuses and should fulfill the following three requirements:
    1. Coursework: 30 modular credits, comprising:
  • modules from ISEP, Business School, School of Computing, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Science
  • laboratory rotation
    1. Service, comprising:
  • IDS Teaching
  • IDS-based industry-relevant projects
    1. PhD Thesis:
  • Work on a topic that advances data science research under the advice of IDS directors and faculty affiliates (refer to “Supervisors“).

  • Research Proposal about an interdisciplinary research project that you are very passionate about.

  • Evidence of Academic Awards and Honours
  • Publications
  • GRE for ALL applicants and TOEFL/IELTS for candidates whose undergraduate degree language of instruction is not English
  • Completed printout of the Online Application Form that NUS Graduate Admissions System (GDA2) will generate; please fill it, sign, date, and include a recent passport-sized photograph.
  • Abstract of Independent Research
  • Updated CV, which is only compulsory for Ph.D.MBA application
  • PhD-MBA Essay, which is only mandatory for Ph.D.MBA application
  • Any other supporting documents
  • Proof of Payment of Application Fee from GDA2
  • Color scan of Singapore NRIC for Singaporean and Singapore PR and Passport for International Applicants

  • Applicants do not necessarily require to complete the “ISEP Application Form.”
  • For the Graduate Admission System application section, please select the program as follows:

  • Applicants should submit the application dossier/documents as instructed here. Please do NOT upload the dossier in the portal for application to this program.
  • Priority goes to applications with COMPLETE information and dossier/documents in GDA2 and ISEP Application Form; the organizers will process such applications
  • The admission and scholarship teams will only processCOMPLETED applications with all required documents received BEFORE the application deadline.
  • Applications received LATER than the application deadline may be eligible for the next available intake.
  • Each applicant should nominate at least two (2) referees but not more than four (4).
  • The “NUS Graduate Admissions System (GDA2)” will generate emails to the applicants’ nominated referees to request the completion of an online Referee Report template within 14 days.
