Introduction to the course
The deadline for registration for the free online course on “Local Water Solutions for Global Challenges” is now open. This course is jointly offered by the University of Strathclyde, Gaia Education and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). Through offering this course, the three institutions contribute to the International Decade (2018–2028) for Action – Water for Sustainable Development.
Why this course?
This course is intended to highlight the importance of water for sustainable development given the severe shortage of freshwater resources globally caused by multiple factors such as climate change, increasing human population and unsustainable growth. Furthermore, it aims to build participants’ skills and knowledge around the importance of effective management of water resources.

Course Completion & benefits
To successfully complete the course, participants should successfully respond to all quizzes. A Certificate of Completion will be presented to participants who complete all quizzes and pay an amount of $100 USD to UNITAR.
Learning objectives
By completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Conceptualize Integrated Water Resource Management Challenges;
- Realize the connection between SDG6 (Water and sanitation) and other SDGs;
- Conceptualize Water treatment technologies within Integrated Water Resource Management Challenges;
- Find out how water treatment contributes to increased water resilience;
- Distinguish transboundary from national Integrated Water Resource Management Challenges;
- Understand the importance of the science-policy boundary;
- Conceptualize Integrated Water Resource Management Challenges within a Food-Water-Energy Nexus.
Course content and structure
This course is delivered through UNITAR’s e-Learning Platform. It consists of 4 modules, each including a lesson, a discussion forum and a quiz.

- 3 – Water Governance
- 4 – The Water-Energy-Food Nexus
