Opportunity Description

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is accepting submissions for the 2024 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. This award recognizes outstanding efforts to restore or conserve heritage structures, places, or properties in the forthcoming edition. The program aims to highlight these achievements, promote best practices, and inspire similar regional projects, whether undertaken independently or through public-private partnerships.

From 2000 onward, the program awarded 290 special awards to winners from 27 countries for their exhaustive understanding of places, meaningful achievements, and remarkable contributions to the conservation of cultural heritage.

Each winner receives a plaque, and all parties listed on the entry form get certificates of recognition. The format and number of awards may vary at UNESCO and the Jury’s discretion. Awards are issued in the name provided on the project entry form.

Eligibility Criteria

Projects considered eligible for this award must meet the following criteria:

  • Projects completed within the last ten years are eligible.
  • This period spans from February 2014 to June 2024 if the pre-existing use was retained or June 2023 for projects with a new use.
  • Eligible submissions include houses, commercial and institutional buildings, historic towns and villages, archaeological sites, and cultural landscapes.

Selection Process

Winners are chosen by the Awards Jury, comprising 5 to 7 international conservation experts appointed annually by UNESCO. The jury evaluates submissions based on set criteria. Winners will be announced in November 2024 across various categories below:

Categories:

  1. Award of Excellence: Recognizes projects displaying exceptional achievement and significant regional or national impact.
  2. Award of Distinction: Acknowledges projects with outstanding achievement and notable regional or national impact.
  3. Award of Merit: Celebrates projects demonstrating superior achievement.
  4. Award for New Design in Heritage Contexts: Presented to newly-built projects with exceptional design that integrates well with historic contexts. Various types of new constructions enriching existing heritage settings are encouraged.
  5. Special Recognition for Sustainable Development: Introduced in the 2020 cycle, this award highlights projects that demonstrate notable achievement across criteria and promise a significant contribution to sustainable development. Eligible projects come from either the Conservation or New Design categories.

  • Entries must be submitted via the online form before the deadline.
  • Two entry forms are available: The Conservation and New Design categories.
  • Ensure the correct category is selected before submission.
  • A project dossier with supporting documentation must be sent to UNESCO Bangkok by mail, postmarked no later than June 30, 2024.
