Opportunity Description

Call for James Dyson Award is open for an international design competition to celebrate, encourage, and inspire Engineering Students and Recent Graduates. The Award organizer seeks designers who think differently to create compelling products. This Award is from the James Dyson Foundation but the James Dyson Charity sets up to inspire the next generation of engineers.

Engineers with undergraduate product design, industrial design, or engineering students and candidates completing a degree in such disciplines within the last four years are welcome to apply for this opportunity. Submissions should follow an iterative design process that employs clever and straightforward engineering principles and tackle apparent problems. The designs should be technically feasible and marketable and may include any research that applicants have done into manufacturing and sales costs.

For the current year, James Dyson will also award entries that address a sustainability problem or sourced, manufactured, and designed projects sustainably.

Selection Process

James Dyson Award selection team will review all entries into three phases as follows:

Phase One:

A nationwide professional and expert jury will select the three projects in the first phase. The jury will select one of the projects as the cash prize winner.

The jury also judges the projects on their entry, not just on the idea itself. So, participants should explain the importance and validity of their invention, how they developed the product, and how they arrived at the final design. Please include the testing approach and the errors made.

Phase Two:

In the second phase, a panel of Dyson engineers will evaluate the shortlisted designs by the national judges. They will narrow down the submission to a shortlist of 20 projects. The panel will check how each design meets the brief.

Phase Three:

At this final stage, James Dyson will review the 20 finalist projects personally in detail. After he selects the best ones, the Dyson Intellectual Property Team will review the projects for any legal infringements, such as third-party patents.

Considering these criteria, James will select the international winner, two runners-up, and the Sustainability category winner.

Note: Participants will own the intellectual property of their projects in any way. Dyson will not appropriate or profit from their idea.
