About the program
South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF) and Department of Science and Technology (DST), with the partnership of TWAS, is pleased to announce a Ph.D. degree fellowship in South Africa for applicants from developing countries. Interested applicants who meet the eligibility criteria are highly encouraged to apply.

Eligibilities:
To be eligible, applicants must:
- be nationals of developing countries other than South Africa.
- not live or work in South Africa or developed countries.
- have held at least a 65% GPA at their master degree
- enroll for the 2022 academic year in a full-time study format.
- be 32 years by 31 December of the application year.
- have completed his/her master’s degree in the field of natural science.
- meet all foreign documents verification qualifications.
- Must be committed to returning to his/her home country after completion of the degree.
- not enroll for other assignments during the fellowship program.
- prepare an official letter from an institution, department, or laboratory of host South Africa and motivation from the applicant’s host.
- have strong English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL PBT 575, IBT 20 TWE 4.5, or Cambridge 58).
- provide his/her research project details that must be registered and accepted by the host university.
- provide a letter of support from the host supervisor.
- be able to cover his/her family member’s costs.
