Opportunity Description

The Emerging Leadership for Asia’s Future: Asia Foundation Development Fellows program offers highly qualified young professionals from Asia an unrivaled chance to improve their leadership abilities and obtain a thorough understanding of Asia’s pressing development concerns. The Asia Foundation’s large 18-country network and wealth of experience working with creative leaders and communities around the region are both tapped into by the one-year professional advancement program. To improve leadership abilities, knowledge of Asian development, professional networks, and exposure to other cultures, the program is designed to be a comprehensive experience that includes intensive learning modules—short courses, conferences, and study tours in Asia and the US.

Program Content:

  • Spring 2023: Leadership Training Program & Study Tour
    Laos, February 12-23, 2023
  • Forum on Leadership for Asia’s Future (Asia)
    TBA Location, February 24-26, 2023
  • Fall 2023: Leadership Dialogue and Exchange Program
    United States, October 1-14, 2023


This program covers all expenses:

  • Costs for coursework and programming
  • Flight tickets and local transportation
  • Lodging and meals,
  • Visa Fees
  • Health and Accident insurance.
  • Award up to $5,000 for a personalized professional development plan. Each Fellow will have the chance to develop unique plans using the cash they will receive to advance their leadership abilities and pertinent professional experience in fields that are particularly crucial to their career development. Each Fellow will be required to create a unique, one-year work plan that may include things like signing up for specialized training programs or short courses, learning a new language, traveling to important regional forums or workshops, or participating in a variety of other enrichment activities.

Note: Asia Foundation does not provide any funding for the fellow’s current or future studies.

Coaching & Mentoring:

The Asia Foundation, which has a track record of dedication across Asia and a history of successful programs, contributes valuable perspectives to the subject of leadership development. The program offers mentorship matching support customized to each Fellow’s experience and professional interests, drawing on the Foundation’s local capacity and regional network. Additionally, during their fellowship year, Fellows are given a set number of one-on-one executive coaching sessions.

Eligibility Criteria:

Fellowship recipients from the Asia Foundation must:

  • Possess a track record of accomplishments and experience in one or more of the areas of expertise of The Asia Foundation, including governance and law, economic development, women’s empowerment and gender equality, the environment, and regional cooperation;
  • Be kind, devoted, regarded as role models, and inspirational leaders in their fields of expertise and in the greater community;
  • Be younger than 40 on January 1, 2023;
  • English language proficiency (TOEFL test scores are not necessary);
  • Be able to attend all program components on the scheduled program dates and be available to do so.
  • Be a citizen of the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
