Located on the Mediterranean coast in Cassis, France, the Camargo Foundation has offered residencies since 1971, supporting over 1,500 individuals in the arts and humanities. Eligibility Criteria

Applicants from all over the world and of any nationality can apply to this fellowship program. Applicants should meet the specific category requirements:

Scholars:

Scholars must connect with the Arts and Humanities working on Francophone and French cultures or cross-cultural studies involving the Mediterranean region’s cultures and influences.

To be eligible in the “Scholars” category, candidates should either hold a PhD and a record of post-doctoral scholarship or be Ph.D. candidates completing the final stages of research or writing their dissertations.

Thinkers:

Thinkers include professionals and practitioners in creative and cultural fields (such as curators, critics, urban planners, journalists, independent scholars, etcetera). We are interested in work agreed to in the theoretical arena, the arts, and society.

Artists (all disciplines):

Artists in all disciplines must be the primary creators of a new project or work and have a track record of publications, exhibitions, credits, performances, awards, or grants.

Preference goes to artists who have a fully developed, mature artistic voice.

When applying, artists should choose among the following subcategories: Visual Artists / Choreographers, Theatre Directors, Performance Artists / Writers and Playwrights / Film, Video and Digital Artists / Composers, and Sound Artists / Multidisciplinary Artists.

Applicants should submit the following documents:

  • Application form 
  • A proposal summary of 100 words
  • Proposal Narrative that describes applicants’ intended focus during the residency (word limit: 1,200 words)
  • The rationale for planning to work at Camargo (word limit: 300 words)
  • The explanation for why residency suits them at this stage (word limit: 300 words).
  • Update CV of 3 pages maximum
  • Work samples for all applicants
  • Two references’ contact details

Selection Process

The Camargo Foundation has two committees: one for Scholars & Thinkers and another for Artists. Each selects its finalists independently. A cross-disciplinary committee then reviews all finalists and selects the fellowship recipients. These selections are sent to the Camargo Board of Trustees for final approval.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome by April 2026. Please refrain from seeking updates on your application. Notifications will be sent via Submittable, and applicants are advised to check their spam folders.

Selection Committees

The selection panels consist of international experts, including former Fellows, scholars, writers, artists, and curators. The Executive Director oversees the process as a non-voting member. Panel members serve for up to three years, with new members rotating in annually. The committee composition is available on the Foundation’s website.

  • The quality of the proposal
  • The applicant’s professional achievements
  • Alignment with the Camargo Foundation’s mission of transdisciplinary exchange
  • The relevance of the residency at the applicant’s career stage
