The World Bank Legal Internship Program is for highly motivated law students worldwide. World Bank Legal Vice Presidency offers this opportunity to help the students get exposure to the work of the World Bank and Legal Voice Presidency. Moreover, it allows individuals to add new perspectives, ground-breaking ideas, and the latest research experiences to the World Bank’s daily operations and enhance their legal skills and abilities while working in a multicultural environment.

As part of the World Bank team, students will work directly with outstanding and inspiring development professionals and senior management. Additionally, they will be able to contribute to the legal services of the Legal Vice Presidency and participate in quality conferences and events during the internship.

Important Details

  • Application Periods:
  1. Application Period for Fall Cycle 2023: 1– 30 April 2023
  2. Application Period for Spring Cycle: 1– 30 September 2023
  3. Application Period for Summer Cycle: 1– 31 December 2023
  • Duration: 3-Months (Maximum)
  1. Fall: 10 – 12 weeks between September and November
  2. Spring: 10 – 12 weeks between March and May
  3. Summer: 10 – 12 weeks between June and August

Benefits of the World Bank Legal Internship Program

Interns will benefit from the program as follows:

  • The program provides students with direct experience of the daily operations of the World Bank by working with staff in legal voice presidency.
  • Participants will work directly with World Bank’s inspiring development experts and senior management to contribute to the legal services delivered by L.V.P.
  • Gain experience in the form of externships during the academic year while enrolled in a law program.
  • Participate in special events and conferences held by the World Bank.

Important Note: The World Bank does not pay any remuneration to interns, and students participating in the World Bank Legal Internship Program are responsible for securing appropriate funding sources for the duration of their internships paid for by a university or sponsoring organization.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants meeting the below requirements are eligible to apply for the World Bank Legal Internship Program:

  • Hold citizenship of an International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) member country, including Afghanistan.
  • Be currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.), Juris Doctor (JD), Master of Laws (L.M.), Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.), Ph.D., or equivalent degree.
  • Demonstrate an excellent command of the English language.
  • Those who have a good command of a second language, mainly if that is a W.B. working language, will be given preference.

Duties of the Interns

During the Internship Program, interns will likely engage in diverse tasks as they arise. These tasks may include:

1. Carrying out various legal assignments under the guidance of the supervising lawyer(s).
2. Research designated topics/issues using available legal documents and alternative sources (like online searches, intranet, and databases), analyze collected data, and present summarized outcomes.
3. Performing comparative assessments of legal matters within a specific field, recognizing legal and policy-related concerns, investigating relevant past cases, and suggesting suitable resolutions.
4. Collaborating in teams for specific tasks or projects under the supervision of lawyer(s).
5. Aiding in the planning and coordination of seminars and gatherings.
6. Fulfilling unplanned assignments upon request from the overseeing lawyer(s).

Additional information:

Visa:

Students participating in the World Bank Legal Internship Program must possess valid student visa documentation endorsed by their respective educational institutions. The World Bank will only assist in obtaining visa documentation for program participants in exceptional cases.

Cost:

The World Bank will not provide financial compensation to individuals participating in the World Bank Legal Internship Program. However, every World Bank Legal Intern should receive compensation according to the standards and policies of the World Bank Group. This compensation can be in the form of (i) monetary fees paid by the university or another sponsoring organization, as approved by the Bank, or (ii) academic credit equivalent to the Bank’s fee structure. Consequently, students enrolled in the World Bank Legal Internship Program are responsible for securing appropriate internship funding.

Medical Insurance:

World Bank Legal Interns are accountable for arranging their medical insurance coverage and covering any expenses related to accidents or illnesses incurred during the internship period. They are required to demonstrate evidence of having valid comprehensive global medical insurance coverage.

Selection Process:

World Bank Legal Interns will be recruited through a competitive selection procedure. The World Bank Group is dedicated to equal employment opportunities.

Onboarding:

The World Bank Legal Vice Presidency will conduct a brief onboarding session to orient the incoming cohort at the beginning of the Summer, Fall, and Spring Internship Programs.

Performance Assessment:

The World Bank will not formally evaluate participants’ performance in the World Bank Legal Internship Program.
