Opportunity Description

The Heinrich Böll Foundation in Washington, DC is seeking a Development and Digital Policy Intern for spring 2024.

The intern will closely collaborate with program directors for Digital Policy and Global Development Policy, focusing on transatlantic dialogues and the Global South. Areas of work include artificial intelligence, inclusion and sustainability in development, and human rights. The intern will be based in our downtown Washington, DC office.

This internship is suitable for students or recent graduates interested in global development and digital policy, with a background in public policy, international relations, law, economics, development studies, or related fields. Applicants should be self-motivated and independent workers.

Benefits

For full-time positions, there’s a monthly stipend of $700. Interns get five paid vacation days for every three months of the internship. If you’re not in the US, the Foundation will sponsor a J-1 US visa and cover the visa costs if needed.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you should have:

  • A genuine interest in the values and mission of the Foundation.
  • Experience in digital or development policy, including policies related to the US, EU, and Global South.
  • Good command of English (German is not necessary).
  • Willingness to work full-time for 3 to 6 months (part-time considered case by case).
  • At least 2 years of university-level experience.
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program or recently completed a bachelor’s degree. We will not consider applications from recent master’s degree recipients, those in a Ph.D. program, or mid-career individuals.

Main Responsibilities

The Responsibilities of the selected fellows include the following points:

  • Research and write about current topics and events.
  • Provide support for events, tours, and speaker series, both substantively and logistically.
  • Help with front desk tasks, like answering phones and responding to inquiries.
  • Manage contact databases.
  • Create communication strategies and content for social media.
  • Update the website and blogs.
  • Finish a capstone project on a topic you choose, which can include a policy paper, expert interview, explanatory video script, or a series of blog posts.
