Scholarships for international students at Kaohsiung Medical University (K.M.U.) include:

  1. Taiwan Fellowships and Scholarships (TAFS): This program offers nine awards in 3 categories: Fellowships for Research, Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarships, and Scholarships for Degrees.
  2. Elite Scholarship: Recipients receive NTD 300,000 per year. Eligible applicants include lecturers, associate professors, assistant professors, and professors from specific countries. K.M.U. Recommend recipients go to the Ministry of Education (M.O.E.) for review.
  3. M.U. Scholarships: Available to applicants interested in K.M.U. International Student Scholarship, with various stipend amounts:
  • Type A: N.T.D. 200,000~260,000 per year (includes monthly stipend, accommodation, and tuition)
  • Type B: N.T.D. 80,000~140,000 per year (includes accommodation and tuition)
  • Type C: N.T.D. 70,000~80,000 per year (covers tuition)

Note: Undergraduate students can apply for Type C, Master’s students for Type B and Type C, and Ph.D. students for all types of scholarships. Non-compliance with these instructions may affect the application outcome.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria:

Qualification Requirements for Bachelor’s Degree:

  • Eligibility for those who have never held Republic of China (R.O.C.) nationality includes:
    • Applicants have never studied in Taiwan as an overseas Chinese student.
    • Not receiving placement by the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students in the current academic year.
    • Foreign nationals with continuous overseas residence of at least six or eight years for certain medical programs can still apply.
    • Exemptions may apply for those selected under specific agreements with foreign governments or organizations.

Application Restrictions and Procedures:

  • International student applicants are typically limited to one application, with the exceptions of those:
    • Who is pursuing a higher-level program after completing the original course of study
    • Who is re-application under certain circumstances, with restrictions.
  • If the student’s conduct or academic performance is unsatisfactory or seriously violates regulations, they are not eligible to reapply.

Qualifications for Graduate Degree Students:

  • Applicants must be a foreign national with no Republic of China (“R.O.C.”) nationality.
  • Must meet one of the following conditions:
    • Has never studied in Taiwan as an overseas Chinese student
    • Has not been placed by the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students in the current academic year
    • Must have resided overseas continuously for at least six or eight years in certain medical fields.
  • Dual R.O.C. nationality holders must meet specific criteria regarding household registration and renouncement of R.O.C. nationality.
  • Foreign nationals selected by a foreign government, organization, or school under the Education Cooperation Framework Agreement may be exempt from certain restrictions.
  • Certain activities, such as youth training courses or language classes, may not count toward the period spent in Taiwan.
  • Specific criteria for Hong Kong, Macao, and former mainland area residents are similar residency requirements, with particular durations and exemptions.
  • International students may apply only once, except for certain circumstances like pursuing higher-level programs or discontinuing studies within one year.
  • Students with unsatisfactory conduct or academic performance may be prohibited from reapplying based on institutional regulations.

Academic Degree Requirements:

For School of Post-Baccalaureate Medicine:

  • Applicants need a Bachelor’s degree or higher from an M.O.E.-recognized institution, verified by the R.O.C. representative office.
  • If enrolled via the International Students Admission Channel, a certificate of enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program or higher is required. Alternatively, Appendix 1, stamped by the original educational institution, can be submitted if the acceptance notice is unavailable.

For other Undergraduate Programs:

  • A senior high school diploma from an overseas school, foreign or bilingual school in Taiwan, or a program offering a foreign curriculum at a division of a domestic private senior secondary school or equivalent, recognized by M.O.E. and verified by the R.O.C. representative office, is required for application.

Master’s Program Applicants:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from a M.O.E.-recognized institution, verified by R.O.C. representative office
  • If enrolled via the International Students Admission Channel, a certificate of enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program or higher is required.
  • Alternative: Submission of Appendix 1, stamped by the original educational institution, if the acceptance notice is unavailable.

Ph.D. Program Applicants:

  • Master’s degree or higher from an M.O.E.-recognized institution, verified by R.O.C. representative office
  • If enrolled via the International Students Admission Channel, a certificate of enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program or higher is required.
  • Alternative: Submission of Appendix 1, stamped by the original educational institution, if the acceptance notice is unavailable.

Required Documents

All applicants should submit the following documents:

  • Online Application Form: Fill out and print for K.M.U. Scholarship applicants.
  • Highest-Level Diploma: Verified by R.O.C. representative office; translations required if not in Chinese or English.
  • Official Transcripts: Verified by R.O.C. representative office; translations required if not in Chinese or English
  • Financial Statement: Showing financial sustainability for study in Taiwan; minimum NT$ 120,000 / US$4,000.
  • Proof of Nationality: This includes a valid passport, parents’ passports, Taiwan Alien Resident Certificate (if applicable), and more.
  • Proof of Language Proficiency: Chinese proficiency certificate at TOCFL A2 level or equivalent or evidence of previous degree programs conducted in Chinese.
  • Study Plan: In Chinese or English.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two, in Chinese or English, submitted online.
  • Other Documents: As specified by the department.
  • Passport Size Photograph: Head and shoulders shot (no hats/sunglasses) within the last 12 months.

Selection Process

  • Applications undergo review and evaluation by Kaohsiung Medical University.
