The BBC World Service/British Council International Radio Playwriting Competition 2023 is currently accepting applications. The international competition, organized by BBC World Service and the British Council, provides authors from outside the UK with a singular opportunity to use the radio drama format to deliver stories to a global audience.
English as a First Language and English as a Second Language are the two categories they are searching for submissions for. Both categories are eligible for one of the two first prizes. Both winners will see their pieces being recorded for transmission and streaming on BBC World Service while they are in attendance at an award ceremony in London. In honor of journalist and author Georgi Markov 1929-1978) of the BBC World Service, the runner-up will receive a Special Commendation.

Eligibilities:

• Open to anybody who is over 18 and not regarded as a resident of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man on February 12, 2023.
• Professional writers and authors with prior publications are welcome to enter, although it is not a prerequisite. They might demand eligibility documentation.
• The competition is not open to employees of the British Council, BBC, BBC Group companies, or any other person associated with the competition. It is possible to ask for proof of age, identity, and eligibility.
• Participants must create a radio play with a play time of roughly 53 minutes on a topic of their choice.

Application Requirements:

You must fill out the online application form and submit the required information to be eligible.

• The script for your 53-minute radio play up to six central character. Submit this as a PDF file.
• A written synopsis that details your play’s entire story. This must be submitted as a PDF file with a word count of no more than 400.
