IDEA – International Distinction in Education Award at the University of Iowa is now available for international students in 2024. The University of Iowa offers scholarships for students who are non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents from across the world. Foreign students admitted in the fall semester of August 2024 are eligible for merit scholarships. Please remember that no financial assistance such as grants, loans, or need-based aid is available for international students.

Students can apply for IDEA to benefit from $2,000 – $15,000 per year. The Office of Admissions offers this scholarship to international students. Additionally, the University of Iowa’s colleges and departments annually administer many more scholarships for new and current students.

Students do not need to make any scholarship application. The University will automatically consider eligible students for Office of Admissions scholarships upon admission beginning December 15. High school credentials and standardized test scores play a crucial role in selection.

Eligibility Criteria

All candidates entering the fall term in August 2024 are eligible for merit-based scholarships. Selection is competitive based on a holistic review of all application information, high school marks or grades, and ACT or SAT scores.

IDEA Renewal

IDEA scholarships are available for up to eight semesters or until their bachelor’s degree is completed. Students should maintain continuous full-time enrolment, 12 semester hours at the University of Iowa. At least a 2.50 cumulative UI GPA is necessary to continue to pay non-resident tuition and remain in international student status for renewal. The University renewal reviews take place at the end of each semester.
