Opportunity Description

The Varkey Foundation accepts applications and nominations for the 2023 Global Students Prize from excellent international students. The 2024 Global Student Prize is a USD 100,000 cash award to honor the contributions of exceptional students worldwide. Those who create a genuine impact on learning, the lives of their peers, and society in general are welcome to apply for the Prize.

The Chegg.org Global Student Prize welcomes students aged 16 and above from academic institutions or training programs, including part-time and online learners.

Applicants will be evaluated based on academic excellence, peer impact, community involvement, resilience, creativity, innovation, and global citizenship.

In 2021, the Varkey Foundation, in partnership with Chegg.org, launched the Global Students Prize, which continues parallel to its sister award of the one million USD Global Teacher Prize.

By winning the Global Student Prize, entrants will get the following benefits:

Eligibility Criteria

All candidates must meet the following set of requirements to apply for the 2024 Global Students Prize:

  • Be at least 16 years old;
  • Enrolled in an academic institution, a training, or skills program;
  • Enrolled in online courses and part-time ones are also eligible;
  • Can be in any school, in adherence to the binding law in any country in the world;
  • Not banned from taking part in the Contest or receiving the Prize under the applicable law of their country;
  • Have no criminal record;
  • Not have acted to bring the VF, its affiliates, the teaching profession, or any GEMS Education group company into disrepute. Or must not put the VF respective agent, directors, officers, employees, and VF and Chegg Parties into disrepute or to have been adversely prejudicial to the interests of any of them;

 Assessment Criteria of the Global Students Prize

The judges will evaluate candidates or nominees against the following criteria:

  • Academic accomplishment;
  • Influence on their fellow students;
  • Making changes in their community and beyond;
  • Tackling the obstacles to obtain their goals;
  • Innovation and creativity of the applicant;
  • Fostering of global citizenship

Selection Process

The selection process for the 2024 Global Students Prize is as follows:

  1. Application process closure initiates scoring and reading by a panel of online judges.
  2. The top 50 finalists are selected.
  3. A Prize Committee chooses ten finalists.
  4. The Global Student Prize Academy picks the winner through a secure online voting system, following additional screening and checks.
  5. PricewaterhouseCoopers (or equivalent reputable firm selected by VF) monitors the process to ensure transparency.

Post Selection Criteria

Please consider these criteria after your selection:

  • The US$100,000 Prize will be awarded to the winner by VF, subject to applicable tax laws and these Terms and Conditions.
  • The winner and connected persons must not engage in activities that harm the teaching profession, VF Parties, or Chegg for one year following the Prize award.
  • The winner must attend financial counseling sessions provided by VF if suggested.
  • Prize money cannot be used for purposes that may tarnish the reputation of the winner, Chegg, or VF Parties, engage in illegal activities, or participate in political activities.
  • The winner must have or open a bank account for prize remittance. If under 18, parents or legal guardians may open an account to be transferred to the winner upon turning 18, subject to country-specific regulations.
  • The winner may need to report expenditures exceeding US$5,000 upon request annually.
  • Any proposed public speaking engagements, press statements, or interviews require prior written notice of 14 days. VF must be briefed and consulted to ensure the content meets their standards.
