Opportunity Description

The European Marine Board (EMB) is pleased to announce the 2024 – 2025 edition of its ‘EMBracing the Ocean’ artist-in-residence program. Now in its fourth year, this initiative seeks to connect creative individuals or groups with Ocean scientists, fostering a two-way co-creation of artwork.

In alignment with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the program aims to elevate awareness of the Ocean’s value, inspire behavioral change, and contribute fresh perspectives to scientific research.

  • Result Announcement Dates: March 19 and 20, 2024
  • Funding Type: Grant of €10,000 for each of the two selected awardees, paid periodically throughout the 12-month residency.

Eligibility Criteria

Applications are:

  • Open to creative individuals/groups from diverse artistic backgrounds.
  • Consideration for both emerging and established artists.
  • Desirable: Prior experience in co-creation with scientists or communities and focus on sustainability.
  • Global applications accepted.
  • Welcomes various creative disciplines:
  1. Visual arts (e.g., drawing, painting, filmmaking, photography, sculpting, digital, installation art)
  2. Literary arts (e.g., fiction, drama, poetry, storytelling).
  3. Performing arts (e.g., dance, music, theatre).
  4. Traditional and indigenous arts.

Required Documents

Please prepare and submit the following documents:

  • Summary of the proposal (150 Words in Maximum)
  • Description of proposed work, co-creation approach, and collaborating scientists
  • Preliminary communication and public engagement plan
  • Description of the applicant’s creative practice (150 Words Maximum)
  • Previous collaboration with scientists and engagement with sustainability topics (150 Words Maximum)
  • Provisional monthly timeline and budget
  • Letter of agreement from scientific collaborator(s)
  • Artist(s) Curriculum Vitae
  • Portfolio with examples of previous work

Selection Process

The EMBracing the Ocean’s Artist-in-Residence Program selection process is as follows:

  • Candidates shortlisted by EMBracing the Ocean Committee.
  • Online interviews with shortlisted candidates and their scientific collaborator(s) on March 19 and 20, 2024.
  • Criteria for scoring applications:
  1. Quality of provisional ideas, timeline, and budget.
  2. Relevance and quality of previous work (portfolio, CV, description of creative practice, motivational statement).
  3. Potential for reciprocal influence between artistic and scientific work.
  4. Potential for reaching a wide audience (communication, public engagement, and impact plan).
  5. Potential for raising awareness of the Ocean’s societal value and inspiring sustainability (communication, public engagement plan, motivational statement).
  • The committee ensures diversity in activities, art forms, target audiences, topics of interest, gender, and geographic location when selecting awardees.
  • In case of conflict of interest, the application is not evaluated by the Committee member with a conflict of interest.
