Domestic and international students who have applied to or are currently enrolled in a research course can apply for Graduate Research Scholarships to pursue Master’s by research and doctoral degrees at the University of Melbourne. The Australia Graduate Research Scholarships offers the following benefits:

  • Full tuition fee offset: Up to 2 years for a Master’s by Research and 4 years for a PhD
  • Living allowance: $39,500 per year (2026 rate) for up to 2 years (Master’s) or 3.5 years (PhD), with annual indexation and paid leave
  • Relocation grant: $2,000 for students from other Australian states/territories, $3,000 for international students
  • Health insurance: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for international students requiring a visa

  • Is an Australian or International student
  • Have applied or are currently admitted to a research degree (Master’s or Doctoral) at Melbourne University.

Entry Requirement for Melbourne University: 

  • Have at least a four-year Australian Bachelor’s degree or overseas equivalent with over 75%.
  • Have you done your final year research project or component?
  • Meet English language requirements:
    • Studied a bachelor’s degree in the last two years in English or
    • have TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson Test of English, Cambridge English Advanced
  • Meet School-specific Requirements

How to apply?

  • New applicants: If you apply for a graduate research course by the deadline, you’ll automatically be considered for the Graduate Research Scholarships. A confirmation will be sent within ten business days.
  • Deferred applicants: If you’ve deferred commencement, submit an online application by October 31, 2026, for reconsideration in the following year.
  • Current students: Enrolled students seeking a scholarship must apply online by October 31, 2026, for consideration the next year.

Notification of Results

  • Domestic students receive a Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset) with their course offer.
  • Other graduate research scholarships (stipend & fee offset) are offered separately but at around the same time as course offers.

Selection criteria

Scholarships are merit-based and will be awarded to students based on their academic achievements, relevant professional experience, publications, completion of the same level degree as the research degree Scholarship that the student is applying for, and the Students’ research skills.
