Opportunity Description

Course introduction

The University of Sydney, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, has developed this course on “Ethical Social Media”.

Today, social media leaves no space between us across space and time, allowing us to find like-minded communities and take part creatively in public life as never before. And, we might often use social media without thinking much about the possible consequences. But there is another face of social media use, which emerges in the form of hate speech, increased observation, lack of anonymity, and questionable use of our data.

Hence, this course will help you explore online identity, social media communities, and their users. Furthermore, you will examine the ways that social media is being used by public institutions e.g., the government to build relation and conversations with audiences. In the meantime, you will encounter the most common ethical debates on social media. You will also have the chance to develop your practical skills by building your professional social media profile, determining your audience, building your social media influence, and exploring how to interpret data analytics to “listen” and communicate effectively.
