The Canadaland Audio Journalism Fellowship Program is an immersive opportunity for aspiring audio journalists to refine their skills and produce compelling stories. In partnership with Journalists for Human Rights, this program offers a unique experience within Canadaland’s newsroom in Toronto, allowing fellows to work alongside seasoned journalists and editors.

Benefits and Financial Aids

Fellows will benefit from the following items:

  • Paid summer fellowship from May 13 to August 30, 2024.
  • The salary is $28.67 per hour for 37.5 hours per week.
  • Opportunity to work on a project from pitch to publication under mentorship.
  • Training in pitching, research, scripting, storytelling, and audio production.
  • Up to $500 in relocation support for successful candidates outside the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants should meet the following criteria:

Qualifications:

  • Applicants should be in the third or fourth year of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in relevant fields
  • Be fluent in English; knowledge of French and other languages is beneficial
  • Have relevant coursework in media, journalism, or storytelling

Skills:

  • Beginner to intermediate audio production skills (Reaper or Adobe Audition)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a newsroom environment
  • Problem-solving skills and flexibility
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Punctuality and reliability
  • Have the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Passion for storytelling through audio

Experience:

  • Previous audio production experience preferred but not required
  • Fact-checking experience required
  • Source-finding experience beneficial but not required
  • Familiarity with research avenues and websites

Knowledge:

  • Audio production techniques
  • Studio recording equipment
  • Mixing and mastering techniques
  • Musical sound, pitch, and tone recognition

The Story Requirements:

  • Produce a 20 to 40-minute documentary-style piece about Canada
  • Focus on showcasing Canada in unexpected ways
  • Maintain high journalistic standards with an irreverent tone
  • Present an enterprise story or a fresh angle on existing narratives
  • Incorporate intersectional perspectives
  • Emphasize thorough research and fact-checking
  • Complete the project within 16 weeks

Required Documents

Applicants should provide Pitches limited to 1000 words with the following specifications:

  • Ensure the story’s relevance to news, society, or culture.
  • Include a focus statement or relevant question.
  • Outline research methods (library, on-the-ground reporting, and more.).
  • Provide a minimum of three potential sources.
  • Incorporate intersectional lens (race, gender, sexuality).
  • Explain the story’s newsworthiness.
  • Highlight anticipated perspectives or revelations.
  • Describe the approach to audio storytelling (e.g., street/ambient sound).
  • Applicants should complete the project within 16 weeks.
