Opportunity Description
GreenDeal-Net calls for applications for the 2024-25 Short-Term Research Fellowships in Europe. It is a great opportunity for early career researchers, Ph.D. students, and Postdoctoral researchers in the field of climate and sustainability policy and governance studies to apply for a short-term research visit to some of the top European universities offered by the GreenDeal-NET Network. This fellowship is designed to help you enhance your research skills, contribute to the European Green Deal studies, and expand your academic connections.
The program will support selected candidates in engaging with top European universities for up to four weeks, where they can work on their specific research projects, collaborate with leading scholars, and gain new research techniques. This initiative is part of the Jean Monnet Network, funded under the EU’s Erasmus+ program, aimed at fostering academic research and dialogue on the EU’s strategy for achieving climate neutrality and sustainability. Up to six researchers will be funded through this fellowship to become active contributors to the GreenDeal-NET community, focusing on European sustainability governance.
Background of the GreenDeal-NET
GreenDeal-NET is a Jean Monnet Network under the European Union’s Erasmus+ program. This Network provides a platform for collaboration on teaching, research, debate, and knowledge exchange in European climate and sustainability governance.
The main objective of the GreenDeal-NET is to advance academic research and teaching on the European Union’s transition towards climate neutrality. Moreover, its next aim is to engage policymakers, scholars, and the broader public on these issues.

Benefits and Conditions of the Short-Term Research Fellowships
GreenDeal-NET offers this opportunity to the successful applicant(s), and the fellowship conditions are as follows:
- Each fellow will receive a grant of up to 800 EUR to cover expenses during their stay, travel, and accommodation.
- Researchers can decide to conduct the research visit at one of the 11 European Universities that are a member of the GreenDeal-NET Network or at another research or academic institution associated with the project.
- Each researcher can only obtain one Fellowship.
- The maximum length of the research visit is up to 4 weeks (28 days).
- Proof of expenses will be mandatory to receive the grant.
- The researcher must submit a short activity report explaining the output of their research stays at the end of the visit.
Who Can Apply?
applicants who meet the following criteria can apply:
- be in the early stages of their research career, such as PhD students and early-career Postdoctoral researchers.
- The research work should be related to the European Green Deal and the complex governance challenges that it poses.
- applicants can apply from any country in the world, but the visa is not guaranteed.
- have obtained a Master’s degree to be considered eligible.
How do I apply for the Short-Term Research Fellowships?
The application procedure for this Fellowship is online, and applicants can start applying by following these steps and instructions:

- Include a motivation letter for conducting a research visit at one of the universities/research centers.
- Add an updated two-page CV, including references to any publications, if applicable).
- Prepare and submit both in a single PDF file to the submission email below with the subject line: “Short-Term Research Visit Application.”
Some conditions:
If you’re applying for the GreenDeal-NET Network, please note that you can only apply to one of the institutions mentioned in the call. Also, only one fellowship is available per researcher. To apply, you must submit your application through the form and send your CV to greendealnet@vub.be. Please don’t contact the host institution directly. If you’re selected, you’ll be expected to contribute to the Network by participating in or organizing a roundtable discussion, delivering a lecture, or contributing to op-eds, blog posts, policy briefs, or other publications related to your research findings. Your work may be published on GreenDeal-NET’s channels.
