Do you want to get a PhD Scholarship, right? Then, submit your application for  the Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships offered to researchers from underdeveloped nations. The university provides doctoral scholarships to talented individuals who choose to split their time between Ghent University ( global North) and a university in a developing nation for their doctoral study (global South). Additionally, Ghent University hopes to assist research centers and teams at the regional partner universities with this scholarship.

Benefits of The Program

  • D. scholarship at the University of Ghent (in full 24 months).
  • The Ghent University promoter is paid a bench fee of € 310 each month of research in Ghent with an additional € 8000 travel budget to cover (part of) the operational and travel expenses for the student, the Ghent University, and the local promoter.

Note: The study conducted at Ghent University is only supported for the first 24 months; the scholars should fully fund the next 24 months.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must originate from and be citizens of developing nations.
  • A candidate, a supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner university must submit the proposals together (South).
  • Although there are no constraints on the subject of study, priority will be given to themes that are important to development.
  • Only degree students (students pursuing a (joint) Ph.D. at Ghent University) are eligible to apply. This award is not available to exchange students.
  • Ghent University hopes that more female researchers will apply for this prize. As a result, a Ghent University supervisor can only help two candidates each call if they are of different genders.

The following mobility scheme is compulsory:

  • Chosen scholars will need to start and end with a research stay of 3 -12 months in Ghent.
  • The first research stay in Ghent should begin between 1 October 2021 and 28 February 2022.
  • At least 24 months of locally funded research residence in the South (refer to the country list) must be scheduled between the first and last research stay in Ghent.

Selection Criteria

This scholarship selection process is highly competitive; therefore, the followings are the criteria for evaluation:

  • The qualifications of the applicant.
  • The relevance of the research topic to the development & capacity building.
  • The doctoral project (including the scientific potential of the promoter’s research group(s), including the partnership between Ghent University and the local institute; the scholarly potential of the local institute).

  • Advise the candidate, explaining the supervisor’s opinion on the candidate’s capability as a future researcher.
  • Advice regarding the ethical and biosafety context of the proposed research subject.
