Core Pillars of the Programme

The International Geneva Peace Fellowship is structured around three core pillars designed to provide a comprehensive learning and operational experience:

  1. Residential Programme: Fellows will be housed at the historic Domaine Barton on the shores of Lake Geneva. Here, they will work on critical, future-oriented projects addressing pressing global challenges.
  2. Institutional Collaboration and Placements: Fellows will be embedded within partner institutions for a nine-month placement. These organizations include Interpeace, the Geneva Graduate Institute, the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), the Kofi Annan Foundation (KAF), the Centre for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC), the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), and the World Council of Churches (WCC).
  3. Co-creation, Research, and Leadership: The fellowship kicks off with an intensive week-long training course. Throughout the 9 months, fellows will engage in cutting-edge practical projects, peer exchange, and sustained mentoring from experts.

Thematic Focus – 2026 Cohort

Applicants must select one of the following thematic areas, which reflect emerging priorities in peace and humanitarian diplomacy:

  1. The New Frontier of Peacemaking: Addressing neglected conflicts, climate change impacts, illicit economies, and digital dynamics in mediation.
  2. Health and Peace: Exploring the intersection of health, peace, and security in contexts shaped by conflict and climate pressures.
  3. Ecumenical Peacebuilding and Faith-Based Diplomacy: Engaging with global church networks and interfaith partners to support dialogue and reconciliation.
  4. Youth Leadership, Participation, and Peacebuilding: Strengthening pathways for youth participation in peacebuilding and policy processes.
  5. Protection of Civilians and Contemporary Conflict Dynamics: Focusing on humanitarian diplomacy, use of explosive weapons, emerging technologies (drones/AI), and displacement dynamics.
  6. Women, Peace and Security and Inclusive Peacebuilding: Advancing gender-responsive approaches and the meaningful participation of women in conflict prevention.

Financial Benefits

Selected fellows will receive the following support during their 9-month residency:

  • A monthly stipend (subject to applicable Swiss social security contributions).
  • Administrative support in obtaining the necessary work authorization and permit documentation for Switzerland.
  • The possibility of accommodation at Villa Barton (subject to availability).

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the International Geneva Peace Fellowship Programme, candidates must meet the following profile requirements:

Career Stage Profiles (Must fulfill at least one):

  • Recent Graduates: MA program graduates (in peace-related studies, social or political science, international relations, etc.) who completed their studies within 12 months of applying, or advanced PhD candidates transitioning into policy and practice-oriented careers.
  • Junior Professionals: Individuals with 1–4 years of experience at the early stages of their career development.
  • Mid-Career Professionals: Individuals with 5–10 years of experience preparing for leadership roles in peace and humanitarian fields.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Demonstrate exceptional leadership potential in policy and/or practice (especially in peace, humanitarian diplomacy, international affairs, or social movements).
  • Possess a balance between analytical and practical experience, and/or strong research skills.
  • Have excellent writing and communication skills in English and/or French (additional languages are considered an asset).
  • Show a proven ability to work effectively in a multicultural team.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to different contexts and working environments.
  • Be available to commit to the full 9-month residency program in Geneva from September 2026 to June 2027.

FAQ

Can I apply if I don’t speak French? Yes, excellent writing and communication skills in English and/or French are required. If you are proficient in English but not French, you are still eligible to apply, though additional languages are considered an asset.

Is this a postdoctoral research program? No, the Fellowship is not a postdoctoral program. While research skills are valued, it is a hands-on, practice-oriented experience that combines policy engagement, operational exposure, and applied research rather than purely academic study.

Is accommodation guaranteed for all fellows? Accommodation is provided at the historic Domaine Barton (Villa Barton), but it is subject to availability. However, the program does provide a monthly stipend to support living expenses in Geneva.
