The Einstein Fellowship applications are now open for outstanding thinkers who wish to pursue a research project in a field different from their previous work.

In cooperation with the Wittenstein Foundation, the Einstein Forum offers this fellowship program to talented youths to undertake a project different from their previous work. This fellowship is a fully funded opportunity designed to enhance the specialization of participants in different areas of the profession.

The program covers five to six months of living accommodations in the garden cottage of Einstein`s summerhouse in Caputh, Brandenburg. Additionally, the fellow will receive EUR 10,000 stipend and travel expenses reimbursement.

By participating in this fellowship program, fellows will benefit from the following:

Eligibilities and Requirements

Applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Not be more than 35 years old.
• Possess a university degree in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
• Present their project in a public lecture at the Einstein Forum occurs at the Wittenstein Foundation.
• Applicants should undertake a project in a different field from their previous research.

PLEASE NOTE THAT NO FELLOWSHIPS WILL BE GIVEN FOR DISSERTATION RESEARCH. THE PROPOSED PROJECT MUST BE SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT IN CONTENT, AND PREFERABLY FIELD AND FORM, FROM THE APPLICANT’S PREVIOUS WORK.

• Project proposal different from the applicant’s previous work (2 pages)
• Two recommendation letters

Note: Applicants who wish to complete an academic study they have already started cannot apply for the fellowship. The proposed project does not need to be completed entirely during the fellowship but can be the beginning of a more extended project.

1. What types of projects are acceptable to propose?

Your proposed project should not be part of your dissertation or thesis, and you must submit all application materials in English. Beyond these requirements, you can propose any project if it is innovative, interesting, and feasible to complete within the fellowship timeframe. Consider if the facilities at your disposal are adequate for your project needs.

 

2. How much should my project proposal differ from my past work?

No strict guideline or formula dictates the difference between your proposed project and your past work. Your proposal should show that it is not directly related to previous work, such as your master’s thesis or publications. It should reflect well-developed and original thought.

3. Is it possible to propose multiple projects?
The fellowship supports only one project. Therefore, it is advisable to concentrate on developing a single, strong proposal.

4. How should I submit letters of reference?

You or your reference can send the recommendation letter. However, it is recommended that your references email the letters to the fellowship directly.

5. Is proof of English proficiency necessary?
The fellowship application process does not require TOEFL or IELTS scores. It is expected that your application will already demonstrate proficiency in English.

6. When can I expect a response regarding my application?

We will confirm receipt of your application promptly. Review and interviews start in June, with final decisions communicated by the end of July.

7. What are the timing requirements for the Einstein fellowship?
While the schedule is flexible, the fellowship typically lasts 5-6 months, ideally during the summer and concluding within the same calendar year.

8. Do I have to stay at Einstein’s summer house during the fellowship?

Resisting in Caputh at Einstein’s summer house is a fellowship requirement.

9. What can the stipend be used for?

The stipend is provided to cover both living and project-related expenses during the fellowship.

10. Can I bring my family, and will the fellowship fund their travel?

Your family can join you, but please note that the fellowship does not cover travel expenses for family members.

11. If my application is unsuccessful, may I apply again?
You can reapply for the fellowship next year if you meet the eligibility criteria and have a new proposal.
