Opportunity Description

The David Perlman Award for Excellence in Science Journalism – News is given annually to recognize excellence in science news reporting. Work produced with a deadline of one week or less is eligible. A journalist or group of journalists receives it annually for a news piece or series in any media—books excluded—that attempts to enthrall and educate the public about Earth and space sciences.

The Perlman Award was first presented in 2000 and is named for the renowned former editor of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Recipients receive the following:

  • An award of $5,000.
  • An award with engravings.

  • Acknowledgment during the AGU annual meeting in the year of the award.
  • Travel costs reimbursed up to $1,000.
  • Two passes to the Honors Banquet the year the award is given, during the AGU annual meeting.
  • Note: Recipients of awards are also entitled to complimentary registration to the AGU Annual Meeting as press members.

Eligibility Criteria:

The nominee(s) must:

  • Be a journalist who publishes in any format—books excepted.
  • Be listed as one of the report’s authors or contributors.
  • Work as a freelance journalist OR as an employee of a network, broadcast station, cable company, or print or electronic publication.
  • Submit just one entry per year to be considered for the award.
  • Not been the recipient of the Perlman Award for the previous two years.

In addition:

  • Up to four writers or contributors in a group may be listed in the nomination.
  • Nominations from within are welcome.
  • It is not necessary for nominees to be members of AGU.

Selection Criteria:

  • Articles or programs that:
    • Bring new ideas or facts about AGU sciences to the public’s attention;
    • Expose and dispel myths about AGU sciences; or
    • make them approachable and engaging for a wide range of people without compromising accuracy.
  • Precision, initiative, and lucidity.
  • Whether the story was released ahead of time by other media.
  • Whether the narrative includes details that are incredibly unique, significant, unexpected, or secret

Furthermore, the news article or series needs to:

  • Be about one or more of the scientific disciplines represented by AGU.
  • Have been intended for and made available to the broader public.
  • Be in English (or with an English translation).

A series is eligible for being judged as a single entry if:

  • During publishing, each component of a series was marked as such. Alternatively, the series may chronicle a continuing activity, such as a scientific society meeting or natural event.
  • It should be noted that only three segments from any series may be submitted for judgment.

Note: When someone is nominated for more than one award, AGU officials will get in touch with the nominee to find out which of their works they would like to have considered further. A person may only submit one piece of work to be awarded.
