About the award

Nominations for the 2021 round of Arrell Global Food Innovation Awards are now open. The awards honor global excellence and efforts in food innovation and social impact that have a substantial impact on people’s lives and improve communities’ accesses to food and better their livelihood.  Arrell Food Institute hopes to inspire global leaders who ensure food security to act for change.

Award value

The Arrell Food Prizes include the following terms:

  • Each of the two prizes will be worth $125,000 CAD comprising a $100,000 monetary award for the personal use of laureates and up to $25,000 per award for travel and accommodation of the recipients, administered by the Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph.
  • An award citation and a commemorative item will also be awarded.
  • Winners are expected to participate in a program of events. In particular, award recipients may be asked to attend the next Arrell Food Summit.

Areas of achievement for the award

Arrell 2021 food innovation awards are given in two areas:

  1. Research Award

This award will acknowledge a researcher, or group of researchers, who has promoted understanding of food production, processing, distribution, consumption, safety and/or human nutrition, with a substantial positive impact on society.

These themes are likely to be in this type:

food science, the environmental impact of agriculture, crop or livestock genetics, agro-ecology, soil health, food animal health and production, pest management, supply chain management, food processing, food packaging, food safety, food consumption, human nutrition, food retail/marketing.

  1. Community Award

This award recognizes an individual, or group of individuals, who has taken actions to improve nutritional health and/or food security, with an emphasis on empowering underprivileged communities.

It includes, but are not limited to:

  • Household nutrition
  • urban poverty
  • Aboriginal food security
  • Non-traditional food systems
  • Socioeconomic policy
  • Poverty elimination, or
  • Community development.

Eligibilities

  • Nationals of any country are eligible for nomination, with no limitations such as race, gender, religion etc.
  • Private corporations, academic institutions, governmental units, charitable foundations, and not-for-profit organizations can nominate or be nominated. In the case of several nominations from a single organization, only the recently dated will be accepted.
  • The individual or group nominee will have to demonstrate significant and documented contributions to either of the award achievement areas.
  • The nomination package must clearly highlight how the individual or group being nominated played a critical leadership role in obtaining the outcomes.

Nominations should be sent to the institute through the following email.

Nomination documents:

  • Information on the nomination (up to one page):
  • Nomination statement (recommended length 3-5 pages):
  • Letters of reference from up to 3 individuals and/or organizations who know the nominee’s work, but are not directly tied with the nominee’s work or organization (length suggested- up to 4 pages).
  • Further documents could be articles illustrating the nominee’s contributions and/or the impact of her/his/their work; other awards and recognitions; publications by or about the nominee that directly relate to their contribution (suggested length up to 5 pages).

Further conditions:

  • In total, nomination packages must not exceed 15 pages and should be presented as one document.
  • Cover emails will not be considered by the adjudicators.
  • All documents must reach the institute in adobe (.pdf) format by the deadline.
  • Each organization/nominator may submit only one nomination to each award.
