The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced an online application system for visas. This new digital platform will help those looking to get a visa to work, study, or join a family in Germany.
Now, applicants can apply online, have their applications checked in advance by the German mission to ensure they are complete, and provide an in-person appointment for biometric data.

Germany’s Foreign Ministry has unveiled a cutting-edge digital platform for visa applications, marking a significant milestone in modernizing its immigration system. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock described the platform as “a real administrative revolution.” The platform aims to streamline the visa process for individuals seeking to work, study, or reunite with family in Germany.

Digital Access Worldwide

The new platform, available since January 1, 2025, offers applicants access to 28 categories of national visas. It is operational across all 167 of Germany’s visa offices worldwide, making the process more accessible for applicants globally.

Addressing Skilled Labor Shortages

Highlighting the urgency of the reform, Baerbock noted Germany’s annual shortage of at least 400,000 skilled workers. “We cannot afford to deter talent with cumbersome paper applications and prolonged waiting periods,” she stated, emphasizing the need for a “modern, digital, and secure” national visa process to position Germany as an attractive destination for skilled labor.

1. Complete the Application Online

Access the Consular Services Portal and fill out the application form.
Upload the required supporting documents.
Submit your application for a preliminary review.

2. Wait for the Preliminary Review

Your documents and information will be checked for completeness.
Any missing details will be clarified directly via the Consular Services Portal.
Ensure you’re fully prepared for your in-person appointment at the German mission.

3. Attend the In-Person Appointment

Establish your identity and submit biometric data (fingerprints and photo).
Pay the application fee onsite.
