Taliban Conduct Examinations for University Professors in Afghanistan
Reports have emerged that Taliban clerics at the Ministry of Higher Education are subjecting university professors from the Faculty of Islamic and Sharia Sciences to examinations. According to (8am) report, this action not only undermines the academic dignity of the professors but is also part of a larger effort by the Taliban to replace them with thousands of clerics who were recently granted master’s degrees by the Taliban themselves.
As per the report, members of the Taliban’s clerical cadre have conducted exams for 22 professors from the Faculty of Islamic Sciences at the University of Education in Kabul under the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education.
The report highlights a concerning claim from one professor, who stated that the Taliban has distributed master’s degrees to 30,000 individuals who graduated from Pakistani madrassas. Alarmingly, many of these madrassas are not even officially registered in Pakistan. The degrees were issued following a rudimentary examination process.
The appointment of clerics without formal university education to academic positions in universities raises fears of increased religious extremism in higher education institutions across Afghanistan.
