Opportunity Description

The University of Groningen invites applications for two Ph.D. positions in Molecular Microbiology, specifically focusing on the Systems Biology of Predatory Bacteria. This opportunity offers a unique chance to explore the interesting life cycle of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus and explore its predatory behavior towards various Gram-negative bacteria.

Successful candidates will join the esteemed research group led by Dr. Renske van Raaphorst, situated within the Molecular Microbiology unit at the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute.

Benefits and Financial Aids

Selected candidates will benefit from the program as follows:

  • Monthly salary ranging from €2,770 gross in the first year to €3,539 gross in the fourth and final year
  • Full-time position (1.0 FTE)
  • Holiday allowance of 8% of gross annual income
  • End-of-the-year allowance of 8.3%
  • Possibility of contract renewal for up to three years based on performance
  • Enrolment in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering for PhD training program

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a Master’s degree with a specialization in microbiology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, or related topics
  • Demonstrate research experience in biochemistry, microbiology, or related fields
  • Possess strong English skills
  • Prove excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Experience in genetic engineering of bacteria, microscopy, or statistics is advantageous.
