Opportunity Description
Registration is open for the Transversalidades Competition 2025, organized by the Center for Iberian Studies (CEI). This competition promotes cultural and scientific cooperation among Coimbra, Guarda, and Salamanca through photography. It seeks to break down barriers and promote inclusion, especially in remote and border territories.
By documenting diverse landscapes, societies, and cultures, the contest seeks to:
- Utilize images’ aesthetic, documentary, and pedagogical value to highlight less visible territories and inventory resources and celebrate local landscapes, cultures, and heritage.
- Foster cooperation between people, institutions, and territories across different countries and continents, encouraging the exchange of experiences and knowledge
- Engage new audiences, particularly young university students, through innovative communication technologies to expand the international network of researchers associated with the CEI.
Themes:
The competition invites submissions that describe the diversity of territories, societies, and cultures worldwide, exploring changes, social organizations, and spaces. Photos should capture natural, economic, social, and cultural landscapes, contributing to territorial cooperation and promoting the inclusion of remote and less visible regions. Themes include:
- Landscapes, biodiversity, and natural heritage
- Rural areas, agriculture, and settlement
- The city and the urbanization process
- Cultural diversity and social inclusion

Benefits and Financial Aids
Awards will be granted to selected participants and photos as follows:
General Awards:
- Overall Winner: 1500 Euros
- Winner of each theme (4 winners): 750 Euros each
- Up to 12 portfolios will receive 150 Euros each.
Special Awards:
- For Portuguese competitors: 500 Euros
- For competitors from Portuguese Speaking African Countries (PALOP): 500 Euros
Notes:
- Recipients of these awards grant CEI the right to use their images in publications, exhibitions, or catalogs resulting from the contest.
- Financial funding will be provided until December 31, 2025. If the winner cannot be contacted, support must be claimed by January 31, 2026.
Eligibility Criteria
All applicants should meet the following criteria:
- Open to all photographers worldwide, regardless of nationality.
- Must submit a portfolio of six (6) photos focused on one of the contest’s themes:
- Landscapes, biodiversity, and natural heritage
- Rural areas, agriculture, and settlement
- The city and urbanization process
- Culture and society: cultural diversity and social inclusion
- Photos must be original and unpublished in previous competitions.
- Participants must follow technical requirements outlined in the competition rules.
Photos Terms and Technical Requirements
- Photos must be original, free of author identification, and not previously awarded.
- Non-compliance results in a two-edition disqualification.
- Submit photos in JPG format (high-quality compression 9) via email (ceibericos.transversalidades@gmail.com) or WeTransfer (for files over 20MB).
- Only one ZIP or RAR file per contestant containing all six photos.
- Resolution: 72 dpi, Size: 2000-2500 pixels (width or height, depending on orientation).
- Winners may need to provide high-resolution images for exhibition to claim their prize.
Selection Process
The following is the selection process:
- The CEI Executive Committee selects a panel of photographers, researchers, and experts to serve as the competition jury.
- Evaluation Criteria:
- Relevance to the proposed themes
- Creativity and originality
- Photographic quality and composition
- Winning selections are final and non-appealable.
How to Apply for the Transversalidades Competition?
To apply and submit photos:
- Registration is free and open to all.
- Each candidate can submit only one portfolio of six (6) photos on a single subject.
- Applications must be submitted electronically via the CEI website linked below.
- Each contestant will receive a unique code for identification by the Jury.
