About the prize
Nominations for the Stockholm Water Prize 2022 are currently open. The prize recognizes women, men and organizations for their extraordinary water-related achievements and those who have made exceptional contributions to the sustainable utilization and protection of the world’s water resources. Hence, eligible individuals and institutions can be nominated before the deadline to win this global prize.
Nomination period: 23 March – 30 September 2021
Awarding institution: Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) in cooperation with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Winners announcement: Usually in simultaneity with World Water Day (22 March 2022)
The winner receives I million Swedish krona (SEK) or more than 114000 USD and a specially designed sculpture at the awarding ceremony in Sweden.
Individuals or organizations meeting the following criteria can be nominated for the prize from any parts of the world:
- Have made great achievements with an enduring significance for the use and protection of the world’s water resources;
- The contribution the candidate has made shall have a great impact or high potential and provide motivation for further contribution to the conservation of water resources and better health and welfare of our planet and its inhabitants.
- Anyone can submit a nomination for an eligible candidate for the prize, however, self-nominations or nominations by those having a professional or direct family relationship with the nominee are not allowed.
- Nominations from female candidates are strongly encouraged.
Particularly, the achievement of the nominee should fall into one of the two categories:
- Policy and practice
This category broadly covers gains in the area from political initiatives to practical implementation that has bettered the management of water as a natural and economic resource or as a human right and basic service.
It contains both basic and applied research to generate new knowledge and promote scientific leadership in the wake of the prize objectives.
The prize nominating committee reviews all nominations and creates a shortlist of eligible nominations. Then, shortlisted nominees’ nominators will have to provide additional documents about the nominees after which the committee selects three top nominees and sends them to the decision-making authority of the prize.
