Opportunity Description

Hohai University Postgraduate Scholarships applications for international students are now open for 2023. The scholarships are government-funded programs available to outstanding students. Students can undertake a master’s and doctoral-level education at one of the oldest Chinese and high-ranking universities.

The primary goal of these scholarships is to cultivate interdisciplinary Hohai professionals who can understand Chinese culture. Moreover, candidates will have an international vision upon completing their studies in China.

In 2024, Hohai University will offer 23 Ph.D. and 30 master programs taught in English and numerous Chinese-taught programs for international students. The standard length for a master’s program is three years, and for a doctoral student is up to 4 years.

For the current year, available scholarships names and details at Hohai University are as follows:

  • Chinese Government Scholarship

Bilateral Program (Type A):

Bilateral Scholarship Program comprises full or partial scholarships for international students. The program follows educational exchange agreements between the Chinese Government and other countries’ governments, universities, or international organizations.

To apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship Bilateral Program (Type A), applicants should apply from the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their home countries and select Hohai University as the first choice. Please remember that Hohai University does not accept applications directly for the scholarship. Alternatively, the University will provide a pre-admission for the qualified candidate to facilitate the application. Check the reference for details.

Chinese University Program (Type B):

To apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship Bilateral Program (Type B), applicants should complete the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and Hohai University Online Applications, respectively. Applicants should note that the Chinese government scholarship is available based on an annual evaluation criterion. The University agency number is 10294 for the current year.

  • Hohai University Scholarship

Hohai University scholarship has an annual review and is a merit-based program. Applicant’s academic results, research, and comprehensive performances are essential to benefit from the scholarship amounts for the following year. The University will update the result each year.

Based on the applicant’s evaluation results, the first-class scholarship will cover tuition, on-campus accommodation, monthly allowance, and comprehensive medical insurance.

The second-class scholarship covers tuition and on-campus accommodation. In comparison, the third-class scholarship includes tuition fees.

  • Nanjing Municipal Government Scholarship

Applicants should download the Application Form for Nanjing Government Scholarship for International Students. Subsequently, they should fill in the form and upload it as an attachment to the online application portal. Considering the annual review result, the Nanjing Municipal Government Scholarship amount will be about 20,000 RMB annually.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should fulfill the following criteria to be eligible for the Hohai University Postgraduate Scholarships:

  • Hold non-Chinese citizens from any country in the world;
  • Be in good mental and physical health;
  • Hold a valid passport;
  • Obey Chinese laws and have respect for its customs and cultures;
  • For a master’s degree, applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35;
  • For the doctoral degree, applicants should hold a master’s degree and be under the age of 40;
  • Should meet the graduate-level program language requirements by providing TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, or other proof of their English proficiency.

Application Documents

All applicants should prepare and upload the following documents for the Hohai University Postgraduate Scholarships:

  • Soft scan of the passport with validity after 30 August 2024;
  • Scan copies of the original diploma and degrees from bachelor’s degree onward (Chinese or English version);
  • Original transcripts scan with all the courses starting from the bachelor’s degree (in Chinese or English);
  • Scan copies of the China-related visa and residence permit, including all the study experiences. Upload a passport instead if there is none;
  • Curriculum vitae (CV);
  • A personal statement or study plan of 800 words, including study and work experience, academic achievement, and future development;
  • English language proficiency certificates such as TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, or other proof of their English proficiency;
  • HSK 5 or above certificate for Chinese-medium programs;
  • Two recommendation letters from associate or high-level professors in the relevant field;
  • Foreigner physical examination form consisting complete all the items as outlined and issued within the last six months;
  • Proof of financial ability (either the family deposit certificate, property certificate, or parent or guardian income certificate more than $5000 suggested);
  • The abstract and content of the applicant’s thesis published, if there are any;
  • Proof of no criminal record;
  • Signed personal statement.

Important Notes:

  • All applicants should pay a 400 RMB/$60 non-refundable application fee.
  • Uploaded Certificates should be original or notarized in Chinese or English.
  • All files must be colored scanned copies of the original ones.
  • Entered information and materials provided must be accurate and without any counterfeiting. Otherwise, the University will cancel the admission.
