Internship benefits
The program is intended to support the IICPSD’s applied research and policy advisory services as well as to enhance the interns’ practical experience in various issues related to private sector engagement, human capital development, impact investing in the achievement of SDGs, and other topics of international development.
Financial Issues
- Internships within the UN system are subject to conditions the applicant must know before signing his/her internship contract.
Besides, interns will receive stipends according to the UN internship policy.
- Any further expenses relevant to the internship must be covered by the nominating institution, related organization, or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to or by the applicants.
Objective
The objective of the Data Science Research Internship is to offer the intern the opportunity to work on how to use big data and machine learning methods on development issues; and particularly to analyze and learn from text-based sources of data with the use of natural language processing algorithms and tools. In particular, the intern will contribute to data collection, preparation, analysis, and visualizations efforts.

Working under the direct guidance of the technical specialist, the intern will perform the following functions:

Competencies
Technical/Functional Competencies:
- Robust programming skills, experience with common data science toolkits, and proficiency in Python is strongly mandatory, proficiency in other data science-related software packages is an advantage;
- Outstanding data preparation, processing, modeling, and visualization skills;
- Good knowledge of machine learning methods and algorithms;
- Experience in using models in production is a plus;
- Working knowledge of current Natural Language Processing approaches is a strong plus.
- Good familiarity with neural networks, preferably experience with Keras, Tensorflow or PyTorch;
- Experience in big data technology and cloud computing platforms is an addition;
- Good applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression analysis;
- Good competency in presenting data science results effectively.
- Interest in International Development and applying the technologies for the common good;
- Excellent ability to write and communicate with precision and professionalism;
- Ability to manage workload with minimal observation and team up with a wide range of colleagues while catching deadlines;
- Finally, robust interpersonal skills: being able to listen and collaborate with a wide range of actors, being able to work independently, being pro-active and initiative-driven;
