Job summary:

CARE Afghanistan is looking for applications from qualified male & female applicants for its Kabul, Mazar-e- Sharif, Herat, and Kandahar Provinces-based positions of Community Health Supervisor (CHS) for its HERP/UHI Project. Eligible applicants can apply after reading the announcement details below.

Summary of key duties:

A Community Health Supervisor (CHS) will be based at Community Health Councils (CHCs) both without delivery and with delivery services in urban areas. The CHS will supervise all community health activities, not only Urban Community Health Workers (CHWs) activities.

Meanwhile, CHSs also supervise public health programs and promote cooperation between the facility and the community. The position holders also assist in the formation and linkage of Community Health Shura (Shura-e-Sehie) and the Urban CHW program/ health facilities.

Reporting:

The Community Health Supervisor will report to the community engagement specialist in the respective provincial level.

Key Relations

  • Reports to Community Engagement Specialist
  • Collaborates with UHI project.
  • Actively contributes to the urban health initiative (UHI) project to assure that the project interventions are implemented in an effective and efficient manner and the project goal and objectives are obtained.

Job Description

The CHS main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Conduct training for CHWs and health promoters.
  • Help CHW trainers to conduct the theoretical training courses for Urban CHWs, and supervise the activities of the Urban CHWs during their practices in the community.
  • Offer on-the-job and monthly in-service training to Urban CHWs.
  • Assists in identifying Urban CHW training needs.
  • Design and implements plans to upgrade the skills of both Urban CHWs and members of the community Health Shura, as needed.

Other related tasks:

  • Assist the staff of the health facility with developing plans for the community health programs in the facility and its catchment area.
  • Implement and supervise the community health program activities in the catchment area of the health facility.
  • Identify and report any problems that may impede achieving program objectives to the head of the health facility.
  • Instruct the Urban CHWs in the development and execution of their action plans.
  • Conduct monthly supervisory meetings with Urban CHWs.
  • Ensure regular replacement of supplies in the Urban CHW kits.
  • Organize frequent visits to the Urban CHWs in their communities to assess and assist their work.
  • Encourage teamwork among Urban CHWs, especially when they are working in the same catchment population

Health Management Information System:

  • Ensures the quality of the Tally sheets and community maps kept by the Urban CHWs.
  • Complete the appropriate Monthly Activity Reports (MAR) and prepare the facility Monthly Aggregated Activity Report (MAAR) in coordination with the HF in charge.
  • Use the reporting system and information received from Urban CHWs to oversee health condition and submit findings to the in-charge person of HF.

Job requirements:

Qualifications and skills:

Education and Working Experience:

  • Be at least a high school graduate. A university degree related to health is preferred.
  • Female applicants and local residents of the provinces are given preference.
  • Have 1-2 relevant experience in BPHS and Afghanistan health system.
  • Experience in community development, previous PHC and management experience.

  • Demonstrate cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability;
    Highest standards of integrity, discretion and loyalty
  • Be detail-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently with a variety of individuals and groups

Skills:

  • Outstanding facilitation and community mobilization skills
  • Have a profound knowledge of Afghan traditions and cultural norms
  • Ability and willingness to work in the communities
  • Excellent spoken /written Dari and Pushto literacy.
  • Ability to conduct mobilization sessions at the community levels.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Being a Nurse or Midwife will be a benefit.
  • Good reading and writing skills in Dari or Pashto is necessary.
  • English language skills will be a plus point.
