Introduction

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau of Education is inviting applications from the Asia-Pacific region for the Wenhui 2020 Award which is themed “Educational Innovation in Response to Pandemic and Other Emergencies” and seeks to blend innovation, knowledge and experience in the wake of making the education sector and its stakeholders more resilient and adaptable to crises such as COVID-19 pandemic.

The Wenhui Award was jointly created by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID) and the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO in 2010, to honor and reward individuals or institutions that have made outstanding contributions to educational innovation in the Asia-Pacific region.

Why this award?

As you know, innovation is crucial for the survival and improvement of almost all industries and fields, including education. Similarly, innovative approaches are essential for achieving equity and quality of education in all contexts, particularly in emergencies and crises. So, considering the background of the COVID-19 pandemic and in view of the fundamental importance of innovation for education in emergencies and crises, this year’s Wenhui Award is themed “Educational Innovation in Response to Pandemic and Other Emergencies”.

Benefits

The Award shall be awarded to two individuals or organizations in the Asia-Pacific region for their exceptional efforts and accomplishments in educational innovation regarding this year’s theme. Therefore, the two winners will receive:

  • A Certificate of Excellence and a prize of US$ 20,000 each.
  • Honorable commendations may be granted to individuals or institutions that have displayed praiseworthy innovative educational practices.

Who can apply?

Applications for the Wenhui Award are open to governments, educational institutions, international organizations (IOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as individuals in the Asia-Pacific region.

What criteria should applications meet?

People or institutions from UNESCO Member States in the Asia-Pacific region that satisfy the following criteria are eligible to apply for the Wenhui Award:

  • Have proven their ability to launch innovative practices that help increase access to information, advance learning and produce new knowledge in the education sector;
  • Should have proved the positive impact of their works to improving the access to education and the quality of teaching and learning processes;
  • Have demonstrated their commitment to bolstering the acceptance and quality of education, and solidifying the concept of inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning; AND
  • Should have ensured that their innovative practices are contemporary and related to the key trends of education in the 21st century.

Assessment criteria

All applications for the Award will be evaluated equally against the following criteria:

  • Relevance (to Sustainable Development Goal ‘4’ intended to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; to the vital trends of education in the 21st century; to the Asia-Pacific region; AND to the specific theme of this year’s Award)
  • Timeliness (developed within the last 3 years, completed or continuing by the time of application)
  • Scale of use and impact (measured on the basis of particular indicators such as number of beneficiary countries in the Asia-Pacific region, number of beneficiary schools, number of beneficiary students, teachers, school leaders, and community members)
  • Ingenuity (how novel the innovation is)
  • Engagement of stakeholders from different sectors (public and private), if possible
  • Sustainability (meaning that the benefits and impacts can go beyond the completion of the innovation project) and replicability (to other countries, educational institutions, and/or related stakeholder groups)

Required documents

1) CV (for individual applicants) or organizational profile (for organizational applicants)

2) Summary of the Innovation Project
The Summary should conform to the template approved by UNESCO.

3) Letter of Nomination
All the applications must provide a Letter of Nomination provided by the National Commission for UNESCO in the relevant UNESCO Member State in the Asia-Pacific region, relevant UNESCO Field Office, or other international institutions relevant to UNESCO indicating their support and comment on the applicant’s suitability for the Award and other information considered relevant by the Nominator.

Besides, the Letter of Nomination must be uploaded onto the online application system by the deadline. It is the applicants’ responsibility to make sure that their selected Nominator submits the letter on time.
