The Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize for 2024, presented by the Democracy & Culture Foundation (DCF) in collaboration with the Kofi Annan Foundation (KAF), recognizes and commends young activists who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to protecting and advancing democracy in their countries. This prestigious award will be jointly presented at the Athens Democracy Forum (ADF) in October 2024.

The primary objectives of the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize are:

• Acknowledging outstanding intellectual and practical leadership demonstrated by young activists engaged in the defense, promotion, or revitalization of democracy.
• The program offers meaningful support to the Awardee, encompassing a one-year mentorship program with an acknowledged expert or senior leader in democracy.
• It motivates and encourages young individuals to dedicate themselves to the progress and enhancement of democratic principles.

Benefits of the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize

The winners will benefit as follows:

• A monetary prize of USD 10,000.
• Award presentation at the prestigious Athens Democracy Forum.
• Coverage of all travel and accommodation expenses for the Awardee’s participation in the Forum, facilitated by the organizers
• The winners will receive an invitation to play a significant role in organizing a panel session focused on youth and democracy at the subsequent year’s Forum.

Eligibility Criteria

• Nominees must be within the age range of 18 to 30 at the time of nomination.
• There is no restriction based on nationality, gender, or occupation.

Required Documents

Nominating organizations must submit:

• A detailed letter of support (max 500 words)
• Completed Submission Form
• A brief video (2 minutes max) by the nominee explaining their work in defending democracy

Selection Process

A Selection Committee will evaluate nominees based on:

• Impact of actions.
• Innovation in the nominee’s efforts.
• Sustainability and replicability of actions.
• Values displayed by the nominee.
• The benefit the award could bring in terms of international notoriety and support.

Nominations must come from an organization, and all application materials should be sent to the submission email by midnight CET on 31 March 2024.
