About the program

International Mathematical Union (IMU) offers Graduate Research Assistantships in Developing Countries (GRAID) program.  GRAID provides extensive support for emerging research groups, working in a developing country enabling them to fund their most brilliant students to study full-time as graduate research assistants and pursue a Master or doctoral graduate degree in mathematics, thereby nurturing the growth of a mathematics community. Therefore, applicants from Afghanistan, in addition to other countries, can seize this wonderful opportunity.

Duration

For doctoral students: four years with an extension of 6 months dependent on satisfactory performance

For the master: 1 year with a renewal of 6 months

Benefits

The students will receive a monthly stipend to run their GRAID Program and they will be supported additionally by connecting their research with an international mathematician.

The amount of assistance is 3500 dollars per year.

Specifically, it covers:

  1. Accommodation expenses
  2. Basic living expenses

Eligibilities

  • The Principal Investigator (PI) should be a university professor in mathematics having a Ph.D., working and living at a university or research institute in a developing country listed here.
  • Graduate research assistants need to be residents of the country of the university or research institution of the PI. There is no age limit to applying.
  • Assistantship candidates must be either pre-accepted to start or already registered in a Master’s or Ph.D. program in mathematics in the home university or research institution of the PI.
  • The PI should already be training master/Ph.D. students and be part of the research group.
  • The International Partner (IP) should be a mathematician working at a university or research Centre NOT located in any of the countries in the list linked above.
  • There should be an ongoing partnership between the PI & IP at the time of application.
  • PI & IP should have regular contact with each other.

How is this program applied for?

A team consisting of a Principal Investigator (PI) plus h/her eligible research group and an International Partner can apply for this program. Applicants cannot apply individually.

Application materials

The following documents have to be uploaded during the application process:

  • A brief CV of the PI and a short CV of the International Partner,
  • A narrative Collaboration Proposal (not more than 3 pages) based on the already existing contacts between PI and International Partner.

It must contain the following:

  • The proposal should detail their professional relationship, the research group the PI hopes to enhance, the number of Ph.D. and/or Master students they hope to support and an overview of their vision for the training of these students.
  • The research plan.
  • An itemized budget for the requested support.
  • The proposal should be signed by PI and International Partner.
  • A reference letter, from the International Partner supporting the application, to be uploaded by the International Partner on receipt of an email asking him/her to do so.
