Fellowship overview
New Europe College-Institute for Advanced Study in Bucharest (Romania) is inviting applications for the 2021/2022 academic year Fellowships. These fellowships are offered to Romanian and international scholars (at postdoctoral level) in all areas of the humanities and social sciences (including law and economics) to undertake their research in these fields. So, this is a unique opportunity for Ph.D. graduates to embark on a different journey and explore working in research areas in one of the most exciting countries in Europe.

Duration: a full academic year or one term (5 months for international applicants)

Benefits
NEC offers a full—funded fellowship which includes:
- A monthly allowance of 850 Euros (tax-free);
- Accommodation in Bucharest, comprising living arrangement and working space;
- Payment of round-trip travel costs to the host country.
- A one-month research tour to an institution of their choice in case fellows stay for the whole academic year is in the institution.
- Free access to the NEC library and electronic resources.
Fellows’ obligations
- NEC expects fellows to work on their projects and participate in the scientific events held by NEC. Participating in the weekly seminars discussing the work underway is compulsory for the Fellows.
- Upon the conclusion of their Fellowship, Fellows are expected to submit a research paper, reflecting the outcomes of their work over the duration of the Fellowship.
- The papers will be featured in NEC publication.
Eligibilities
- NEC Fellowships are available to postdoctoral level researchers (excepting Pontica Magna, which is open to doctoral students and non-degree candidates – see in the main link).
- The institution invites Romanian and international candidates in all fields of the humanities and social sciences to apply for the core NEC program.
- Some other Fellowship programs are for candidates from particular countries or academic fields (see below).
Selection process
NEC’s academic staff, in collaboration with other external experts, will screen all applications and notify all applicants of the results of the pre-selection in the second half of March 2021 by e-mail. Then, Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview, scheduled on April 14–16, 2021. After all, the members of NEC’s Academic Advisory will decide on selecting the NEC.
Selection criteria
Applications will be reviews against these criteria:
• High quality of the candidate’s academic profile and publications, contribution to international research;
• Innovation in research proposal along with a major contribution to scholarship; and
• The use of interdisciplinary and/o comparative methods are an addition.
How to apply?
Applicants can submit the applications through NEC’s application platform online.
Applications can be submitted in English, French, or German. Please also bear in mind that English is the preferred medium of communication during most NEC events.
Required documents
Applicants should submit the below documents to the application platform:
– a fresh photo
– a scan of their Ph.D. diploma
– at least two original letters of recommendation (in English, French, or German) written with explicit support for applicants’ application for the NEC Fellowship.

Applicants should answer all the questions in the application form while not exceeding the allotted space. - The research project description should be no more than 12,000 characters (with spaces), including footnotes/endnotes and bibliographical references.
- And, the project should elaborate on the state of research in your specific field of interest and indicate your objectives; it should also contain bibliographical references.
