In order to further its goal of advancing cutting-edge scientific research in underdeveloped nations, ICTP provides gifted students with a Postgraduate Diploma Program that gets them ready for PhD studies.

Since the Postgraduate Diploma Programme’s inception in 1991, a large number of its alumni have pursued PhDs in numerous esteemed universities, both in North America and Europe. Following a few postdoctoral fellowships overseas, a large number of them have returned home and are actively engaged in advanced research group development and teaching. Some have chosen to work as scientists in the world’s top research institutes. Numerous past pupils have kept up active work with ICTP throughout their professional lives.

Benefits:

• There is no tuition and a travel grant of up to ten scholarships annually for applicants from underdeveloped nations.
• Scholarships and travel allowances will be given to the 10 students from disadvantaged nations chosen for each Postgraduate Diploma Program.
• Scholarships will be awarded to students for the full academic year. A small number of eligible applicants who satisfy the same selection standards as everyone else are allowed to pay for their own attendance at the courses.
• In order to receive funds equivalent to those provided by the Center, they must provide written confirmation from a banking institution or funding agency that the funds are accessible for their whole year of stay.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Young, qualified graduates from any nation that is a member of the UN, UNESCO, or IAEA are eligible to apply for the Postgraduate Diploma Program. Typically, these individuals are under 28 years old.
• Academic recommendations and the candidates’ academic records will be taken into consideration while choosing the candidates. Being able to speak and write English well is a prerequisite for the Postgraduate Diploma Program.
• The candidate should be sufficiently knowledgeable about the following subjects related to the position for which they are applying:
  • Solid state physics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, classical mechanics, electrodynamics, and mathematical physics are all relevant to condensed matter physics.
  • Quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, special theory of relativity, electrodynamics, classical mechanics, and cosmology are the subjects covered in High Energy, Cosmology, and Astropartical Physics.
  • A theoretical foundation in engineering, mathematics, or physics is necessary for Earth System Physics. Mathematical techniques are used in geophysics and geosciences.
  • Basic abstract algebra, components of real and complex analysis, and topology are all related to mathematics.
  • For the Quantitative Life Sciences: elementary programming knowledge, mathematical techniques for physics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, and classical mechanics

Documents Requirement:

Candidates should provide the following files with their application in addition to filling out an online form:

• Copies of transcripts from university degrees and academic records in English (before being admitted to the program, the chosen candidates must provide originals or certified copies of these records along with an official English translation);
• Any credentials or records attesting to the student’s proficiency in advanced coursework, scientific literature study, and English composition;
• Two reference letters from senior scientists who are acquainted with the applicant’s research and activities.
