Opportunity Description
William Thomas Williams bestowed his entire estate on James Cook University in 1995. His estate included real estate and a music collection. The proceeds from the property’s sale are placed in a special restricted fund. The funds will be used to educate people in the creative arts. The provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries, and Grants Policy apply to this scholarship.

Scholarship Value:
The scholarship will be worth $10,000 for full-time students and $5,000 for part-time students, or such amounts as the Fund administrator determines from time to time. Paid in two equal installments after the census dates of Study Periods 1 and 2 in the year following the awarding.
Who can apply?
- Candidates who are open to competition include:
- Who are currently enrolled in, or plan to enroll in, the Bachelor of Arts Honors year
- International applicants or those who are Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents
- Have good leadership skills
- Have professional experience
- Have a good academic record

Selection Process:
The applicant authorizes the Selection Committee to conduct such inquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability for the scholarship, including authorizing the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record and seek opinions from relevant members of this University’s or any other educational institution’s academic staff.
The William Thomas Williams Awards Committee will choose the winner based on the selection criteria.
The Selection Committee will be made up of at least three members of staff, who will be:
- Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Division Head
- Academic personnel nominated
Selection Criteria:
The William Thomas Williams Awards Committee will choose the winner.
- Academic merit (50%)
- Commitment to a specific field (25%)
- Experience working/volunteering in a chosen field (25%)
Note: The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award a scholarship in any year if there are no candidates of sufficient merit in the Selection Committee’s opinion. The Selection Committee will make all decisions regarding the Scholarship awardee.
