The CGS applications at China University of Petroleum are now open to international students in 2024. Chinse Government Scholarship (CGS), in partnership with China University of Petroleum (CUP) offer scholarship programs for the current year which include as follows:

• CGS-Bilateral Programs: This is a Type A Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) program. The only awarding organizations are the Chinese Embassy or the relevant Education Ministry in the applicant’s country. CGS-Bilateral Program comprises all scholarships of China’s Ministry of Education (MOE) as per educational exchange agreements between the Chinese Government and governments of other countries, institutions, universities, or international organizations. International students can apply for their undergraduate, graduate, general scholar, and senior scholar programs through Bilateral Program.

• CGS – Chinese University Program: The Chinese University Program is the CSC Type B program and is part of CGS. This program includes the Silk Road Program, High-Level Postgraduate Program, and Shanghai Cooperation Organization University Program. For the University program, international students can apply through CUP to pursue their undergraduate and postgraduate studies at CUP (Beijing).

China Scholarship Council (CSC) organizes and administers the CGS in 279 designated Chinese universities, including the China University of Petroleum (CUP). Students can pursue their studies in various academic programs in Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Economics, Legal Studies, Medicine, Management, History, Literature, Science, Philosophy, and Fine Arts for scholarship recipients at all levels.

Benefits of the CGS at China University of Petroleum

The CGS at China University of Petroleum is a fully-funded scholarship that covers the following costs and allowances:

• Full tuition exemption;
• On-campus and off-campus accommodation;
• Monthly 700 RMB allowance for off-campus undergraduates, masters, and ordinary students; RMB 1000 per month for off-campus doctoral students and advanced scholars;
• Living expenses for undergraduates: 2500 RMB/month, for master’s and general scholars: RMB 3000/month, and for Ph.D. and advanced scholars: 3500 RMB/month
• Comprehensive medical insurance is 800 RMB/person/year and RMB 400/person for a study duration of fewer than six months

Bilateral Programs-CGS

• Applications are open to non-Chinese citizens;
• Be in good health condition;
• Undergraduate applicants must be high school graduates under the age of 25;
• Master’s degree applicants must be undergraduates with a maximum 35 years age limit;
• Doctoral applicants must be master’s degree holders with a maximum 40 years age limit;
• General scholar program applicants must be high school graduates with a maximum 45 years age limit;
• Master degree holder or associate professor (or above) with a maximum 50 years age limit when applying for senior programs

Silk Road Program-CGS

• Be from countries that are part of the One Belt, One Road initiative;
• Be non-Chinese nationality from countries along the Silk Roads;
• Bachelor’s candidates must prove a minimum Chinese Proficiency of HSK 3(180);
• Master’s and Ph.D. candidates for Chinese-taught programs should prove minimum HSK 5 (180) and HSK 4(180) for bachelor students
• Those who prove the above scores but do not meet language requirements for direct entry into their selected majors should undertake a one-year Chinese language course;
• For English-taught programs, Masters and Ph.D. candidates must prove at least IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 80, or an official statement from their previous University stating English as the teaching language for two years;
• Undergraduate applicants must be high school graduates under the age of 25;
• Master’s degree applicants must be undergraduates with a maximum 35 years age limit;
• Doctoral applicants must be master’s degree holders with a maximum 40 years age limit

Shanghai Cooperation Organization University Program -CGS

• Applications are open to non-Chinese citizens;
• Be in good health condition;
• Hold a graduate degree and be under 35 years old;
• To apply for Chinese-taught programs, applicants should prove the Chinese language requirement of HSK 5 (180);
• For English-taught programs, Masters’s and Ph.D. candidates must prove at least IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 80, or an official statement from their previous University stating English as the teaching language for two years

Required Materials and Documents

The application package for CGS at China University of Petroleum comprises the following documents:

• Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (in Chinese or English);
• Copy of passport photo with expiry later than September 2024
• Academic transcripts from undergraduate degree onward with notarized English or Chinese translations;
• Proof of Chinese proficiency certificate (HSK for Chinese-taught programs);
• Proof of English proficiency certificate (IELTS or TOEFL for English-taught programs);
• An English or Chinese study plan with more than 1,000 characters or words, including personal study, academic research achievements, research plans, work experience, career planning after graduation, reasons behind choosing the degree and CUP, applicant’s knowledge about China;
• Two English or Chinese recommendation letters from Professor or Associate Professor;
• Original Foreigner, Physical Examination Form, completed in English;
• Non-criminal record certificate issued within the last six months prior to the submission date of the application;
• Photocopy of the residence permit page (for fresh graduates currently in China only);
• Any additional supporting documents such as supervisor’s recommendation form, award certificates, papers, and publications)

Application Procedure

There are different applying methods to apply for CGS at China University of Petroleum:

A. Chinese Government Scholarship Type A Program

Candidates who apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship Type A Program should follow these instructions:

1. Submit the scholarship application to the overseas student communication authorities. The relevant dispatch authority will issue the required Recommendations.
2. Apply to the China University of Petroleum (Beijing) through the CUP portal. A CUP staff will contact the applicants if their application materials meet the admission standards of the University. In this case, the applicant will get the Pre-Admission Notice. Please note that there is no application fee for CSC class A applications.
3. Also, apply to the CSC application portal. Select China University of Petroleum (Beijing) as the first choice, and remember to select Type-A for Bilateral national projects. Please consult the agency number of the awarding institution with the dispatching authorities for international students in their home country.
4. Finally, submit all the application materials to the home country’s dispatching authority by the deadline.

B. Chinese Government Scholarship Type B Program

Applicants applying for the Chinese Government Scholarship Type B Program should submit their applications to the CUP and the CSC application portals. The China University of Petroleum (CUP) agency number in the application portal is 11414.
