Opportunity Description

To advance research and education in cyber defense, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne and the Cyber-Defense (CYD) Campus have jointly designed the “CYD Postdoctoral Fellowships—A Talent Program for Cyber-Defense Research.” These two-year fellowships will allow doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to complete a research project under the observation of a Swiss higher education institution or university professor. Applicants worldwide who meet the eligibility below can apply and take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.

Benefits

These fellowships provide the following benefits:

  • Salary contribution: Based on the host institution’s salary scale, including social security benefits.
  • Research costs: Up to CHF 3,000 per year for specific project equipment (not general IT material).
  • Conference costs: Up to CHF 5,000 per year.

Fellowship Research Areas

The Fellowships are open to researchers at the postdoctoral level who are willing to contribute to issues at the crossroads of cyber-security and data science, with a particular focus on:

  • New technologies for preserving the privacy, integrity, and availability of cyber and cyber-physical systems
  • Privacy-strengthening technologies
  • Data science and artificial intelligence techniques for analyzing cyber- and technology-relevant data
  • Research on vulnerabilities and backdoors in digital systems.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

CYD Doctoral Fellowships

  • Open to citizens of any nationality
  • No age restrictions
  • Must be enrolled in a doctoral program at a Swiss higher education institution
  • Requires endorsement from a supervising professor at a Swiss institution
  • Applicants can seek endorsement from a professor at a school of applied sciences if enrolled in a Swiss university doctoral program
  • Funding requests for less than four years are allowed if in the final stages of the doctoral program
  • Fellowship should be full-time (100%), with possible exceptions for personal reasons

CYD Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • Open to citizens of any nationality
  • No age restrictions
  • Must conduct fellowship in a different lab from doctoral and current postdoctoral research
  • Cannot be employed by the host lab during the application period (1 Dec 2023 – 23 Feb 2024)
  • Requires endorsement from a supervising professor at a Swiss higher education institution
  • Fellowship should be full-time (100%), with possible exceptions for personal reasons

Selection and evaluation

This fellowship selection process is highly competitive. Excellence is the main evaluation criterion, and it is measured by academic records and professional achievements. Below is the highlights of process:

Stage 1:

    • A CYD Campus internal committee evaluates applications.
    • Criteria: The candidate fits with CYD Campus and program aims.
    • Shortlisted applicants are assigned a prospective CYD Campus mentor.
    • Mentor interview to endorse applicants for Stage 2.

Stage 2:

    • Submission of a full research proposal by the deadline (TBC).
    • Final decisions by a committee chaired by the CYD Campus Director with 3-5 members from CYD Campus and Swiss higher education institutions.
    • Results will be announced by the end of November 2024.
