Opportunity Description

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) offers a paid, 11-week summer internship called AAAS Diverse Voices in Science Journalism (DVSJ) Internship for students pursuing journalism careers and interested in learning about science writing. Held atAAAS’s Science magazine headquarters in Washington, D.C., interns work under the mentorship of professional writers and editors, gaining firsthand experience in covering critical scientific and technological issues.

The Diverse Voices in Science Journalism Internship program promotes diversity within science reporting. It is for students committed to extending science journalism’s reach into underrepresented communities. Interns contribute to the magazine’s news section, creating bylined articles and learning the ins and outs of science communication.

The internship runs from June 2 to August 19, 2025, and covers travel to Washington, D.C. While interns are responsible for living expenses, they benefit from an orientation (June 4-6) and a wrap-up session (August 18-19) with AAAS Mass Media Fellows.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following documents:

  • Applicants must be committed to covering and representing underrepresented communities in science journalism.
  • Students with a strong interest in diversity in science and journalism
  • Applicants from historically excluded racial/ethnic groups, sexual minorities, immigrants, first-generation college students, people with disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, and others from underrepresented backgrounds
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate, community college, or graduate journalism program; those with journalism experience but not in a formal program are also eligible.
  • Spring 2025 graduates are welcome to apply.
