Organization Description

The University of Hong Kong (HKU), founded in 1887 as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese and formally established in 1911, is Hong Kong’s oldest tertiary institution. Located in Pok Fu Lam, Governor Sir Frederick Lugard proposed it to compete with other Great Powers establishing universities in China.

HKU is governed by three bodies: the Court (overseeing and legislative body), the Council (governing body), and the Senate (academic authority). It comprises ten academic faculties, 20 residential halls, and colleges, with English as the primary language of instruction.

Notable alumni include Dr. Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Republic of China, and prominent political figures like Anson Chan, Carrie Lam, Jasper Tsang, and Regina Ip.
