Why this award?
In the time of COVID-19 pandemic as a global health emergency and given that it has negatively impacted the protection and health of peoples of concern across the world causing. For example, loss of access to asylum, freedom of movement, and livelihoods; mounting food insecurity; and risk of sexual and gender-based violence, refugees and other forcibly displaced populations are among some of the most susceptible people affected by the pandemic. Fortunately, in response, creativity and innovation also have thrived.
In this respect, RLOs, working with persons of concern and host communities, have initiated many innovative approaches. For instance, reshaping existing livelihood projects, manufacturing protective equipment, hosting radio slot discussions to disseminate correct information amongst refugees, producing plant-based soaps for distribution, and using medical/psychosocial consultations via accessible messaging tools.
In acknowledgment of these efforts and achievements, UNHCR, via this Award, intends to honor and celebrate the creativity and innovative approaches applied by the RLOs in tackling manifold challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
