Opportunity Description

The Amgen Scholars Program is open for undergraduate students who want to undertake scientific research projects at many of the world’s leading institutions.

About the Program:

The program’s objective is to provide undergraduate students from various countries who are committed to or those considering a career in biology or related sciences and looking to continue their  studies, with eight-week of biomedical research experience in the basic and translational sciences. Research experiences will be delivered via members of the Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the Institute of Industrial Science.

The program supports the following terms financially:

  • Room/Accommodation
  • Stipend: 250,000 JPY
  • Travel Costs

Note: Students must arrange their private health and travel insurance.

Who is Eligible for the program?

  • The applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent or at least have completed their first year of undergraduate study when the summer program begins.
  • Must have a strong record of academic performance
  • Excellent knowledge of English Language with TOEFL (IBT) score of 72/ IELTS score of 5.5/Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC Score of 1095, or any other equivalent
  • Interested in pursuing a Ph.D. career

Additional Requirements

  • The candidates must devote total effort to participate in the Amgen Scholars Program. (The participants cannot take any other courses or hold a job duration of the program)
  • Must live in accommodation provided by UTokyo
  • Being able to participate fully in the day-to-day life of the research group
  • Respect the work of all members and attend laboratory meetings or other gatherings.
  • Prepare a research paper and submit it to the UTokyo Amgen Scholars program at the end of the program

Required/Supporting Documents:

  • Portrait Photo with jpeg format (Your full face should be visible, and your eyes must be open)
  • Copy of your passport or ID card (scan and save it with its name and jpeg file format)
  • CV and Cover letter (Download and complete the designated form below and save it as a Word file format)
  • Academic Transcript (your official academic transcript should be in English and scan both front and back pages as a PDF format)
  • Questionnaire (Download the designated form here and save it as an Excel File)
  • Proof of your English proficiency if English is not your first language or English is not your instruction language. (Valid Proficiency Test score listed on Eligibility Part)
  • Consent Form (Download the consent form and read it carefully, then sign the form and submit it as a pdf file format)
  • Two Recommendation letters (One who is from a faculty member at your current institution)

Note: the applicants can not submit the letters of recommendation by themselves. Download the INSTRUCTION for RECOMMENDERS and give it to your recommenders for further details regarding the recommendation letter
