The East China Normal University offers International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship for international students who are willing to have future careers in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL). The objective of the East China Normal University (ECNU) scholarship is to strengthen mutual collaboration and exchange between Chinese language teachers and learners in the context of language skills acquisition.

Scholarship and Benefits
The selected candidates will benefit from the following items:
- Full tuition fee waiver
- On-campus accommodation (economic double rooms with public restrooms)
- Off-campus living allowance (700 RMB/month for Master’s, 1000 RMB/month for Ph.D.)
- Monthly living stipend:
- 3,000 RMB for Master’s students
- 3,500 RMB for Ph.D. students
- Comprehensive medical insurance (800 RMB per person per year)
Note: Monthly stipend issued based on registration dates and presence in China
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must be a non-Chinese citizen
- Good physical and mental health
- Strong academic and behavioral record
- Aged 16-35 as of September 1, 2025 (Chinese language teachers currently employed can apply until age 45)
- Must aspire to a career in teaching or international promotion of the Chinese language
- Bachelor’s degree required for Master’s applicants; Master’s degree in a related field required for Ph.D. applicants
- Language proficiency requirements:
- Master’s: Minimum HSK Level 5 (210 points) and HSKK Intermediate (60 points)
- Ph.D.: Minimum HSK Level 6 (200 points) and HSKK Advanced (60 points)
- Preference goes to applicants with proof of future employment in Chinese language education
Required Documents
All applicants must submit the following supporting documents:
- Completed application form
- Copy of passport
- HSK and HSKK certificates (valid within 2 years)
- Recommendation letter from the recommending institution
- Highest degree certificate and academic transcripts (original or notarized copies)
- Personal statement in Chinese (printed and signed)
- Two reference letters from professors or associate professors
- 1,000-word essay on “Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages” for Master’s degree
- A personal statement in Chinese with more than 3000 words should be printed and signed for a PhD
- Foreigner Physical Examination Form (valid within 6 months)
- Non-criminal record certificate (valid within 6 months)
- Application fee: 800 RMB (non-refundable)
- If under 18, a legal guardian designation document is required

- Register and apply on the official ICLTS website between February 20 and May 15, 2025.
- Register and apply through ECNU’s online portal and pay the application fee.
