Opportunity Description

King Baudouin Foundation offers this internship program via Elisabeth and Amelie Fund to foreign master’s students to intern in sustainable water management in a developing country.

The Elisabeth and Amelie Fund is for sustainable water management in developing countries. This program, among others, is financing on-the-spot internships for students of developing countries and nationalities studying in Belgium. The fund considers an integrated approach to water management, including technical and sociological aspects.

All applicants should note that the internship program will occur in the student’s country of origin or another developing country. The internship program is tied to a master’s thesis or an equivalent under the responsibility of the Belgian university where the student is studying.

The maximum grant amount is up to € 5,000, which covers all expenses for the internship.

The internship lasts 1 to 2 months, and must occur between December 2023 and the end of August 2024. Total number of available grants for the 2023/24 is ten.

Elisabeth and Amelie Fund Amount

The award will pay the costs of the internship up to a maximum of € 5,000, which covers the following charges:

  • Transportation (flight tickets)
  • Accommodation (sleeping accommodation)
  • Costs of purchase/use of material

Note: The Elisabeth and Amélie Fund does not cover general-purpose equipment like computers, touch pads, cameras, Dictaphones, etcetera.

Who Can Apply for the Elisabeth and Amelie Fund?

Those who meet the following requirements will be eligible for the Elisabeth and Amelie Fund:

  • Applicants must be from developing countries
  • Applicants who pursue a master’s level degree (master’s, specializations master’s, or a second bachelor degree)
  • Applicant’s degree must be related to the water management

  • A provision version of the table of contents of your thesis

Selection Criteria

The selection committee will evaluate all submitted applications against the following criteria while selecting the applicants:

  • Objective: The internship is related to water access or management in underdeveloped countries and must be part of the candidate’s end-of-year project.
  • Pertinence: The candidate’s activity at the local level, and the results that result from it, address key local issues.
  • Capabilities: The funding requested must correspond to the needs of the candidate. They must have the resources to finish the internship under the specified conditions.
  • Originality: The candidate’s strategy for his internship or the framework within which he will operate is innovative. They differ from traditional approaches or frameworks in some ways.
  • Impact: What is learned during the internship adds significant value to the scientific approach that underpins the end-of-year thesis.
